36% of GOP Voters Likely to Vote for Trump If He Runs Third Party…

by Rasmussen Reports  |  published on August 4, 2015

If “The Donald” loses the Republican presidential nomination and runs as a third-party candidate, he definitely could put a crimp in GOP hopes to reclaim the White House.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 29% of Likely U.S. Voters say they are at least somewhat likely to vote for Trump if he is not chosen as the GOP nominee and runs as a third party candidate. But that includes only 14% who say they are Very Likely to vote for him. Sixty-eight percent (68%) say they are unlikely to vote for the billionaire developer if he runs as a third-party presidential candidate, with 51% who say it’s Not At All Likely. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Worrisome for Republicans, however, is the finding that over a third (36%) of Likely GOP Voters say they are likely to vote for Trump if he’s a third-party candidate, with 18% who are Very Likely to do so. One-in-three (33%) voters who are not affiliated with either major party also are likely Trump voters, including 16% who say they are Very Likely to vote for him if he runs third-party.

Even 19% of Democrats describe themselves as likely Trump voters, although that includes just nine percent (9%) who say they are Very Likely to vote that way.

People we want to get back to being a country that stands with the Bill of Rights and The CONSTITUTION Right? Well there is only one candidate that does that and when he says he will do something he DOES IT ! That is my senator Ted Cruz ! He can debate the best. The debate Trump made a big ass of himself. They didn’t want Cruz to talk much cause he would of stole the whole debate and it showed too ! Trump is walking the walk and talking the talk. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Look back at his history. He WAS anti GUN ! Look at who one of his pals is George Soros. NO WAY IN HELL WILL I OR MY FAMILY VOTE FOR THAT LIBERAL hiding in a Conservative . We have seen this before !

  • Smitch

Trump has my vote! Rep or third party! I am TIRED OF THE RHINO’S!

  • Joe

What’s the difference between Obama and the RINOs???????? We only have a one party system in America!!! So a third party will make it a two party system once again!!

  • Ron Swanson

Good Governor, not so much after that. Interesting that he left MN and moved to Mexico. No to Jesse!

  • Ron Swanson

Republicans, you better look at history when the Republicans subbed Jesse Ventura, and we all know how that turned out. Have to say, not a bad governor.

    • MeForever

Trump is skilled at recognizing talent and placing talent in best opportunity to succeed. COULD be Ventura would be invited… has Gov experience, loves USA, former military – SEAL… sure is brave…

Very few things would cause the GOP base to repeat the massive mistake of 1992 when Perot ran on a 3rd party ticket and handed the election to Slick Willy. One of those things would be seeing the GOP nominate Jeb. Nothing would enrage the conservative base more.

    • Richard Winger

The exit polls from 1992 showed 36% of the Perot voters said they would have voted for Clinton if Perot were not on the ballot. They also showed 36% said George H. W. Bush. The other 24% said they would have voted for another third party or not voted at all. Also during the period mid-July to September 30, when Perot was not running, polls showed Clinton winning.

This could well be the worst possible scenario for the U.S. Presidential elections, it could guarantee a GOP loss and a Democrat win. It would be different if he could actually win as a third party candidate, however that’s extremely unlikely. This could split the vote on the independent/conservative side and consolidate liberals and progressives. If his popularity continues at some level but can’t win the nomination and runs third party, this nation could easily cease to exist as a Constitutional Republic. This scenario would in all probability end up as another Bush, Clinton, Perot, disaster. This country is on the precipice of full tilt socialism and cannot afford this kind of horse play.

  • I am a Reagan Republican to the core, and Trump has the right ideas on most of the issues that matter. I am not 100% with Trump on every issue, but I’m not 100% with anyone else either. Ronald Reagan said that if someone is 70 or 80% with you on the issues that he must be your friend; he was 100%
right !! We have a long time to go till Nov. 2016 for things to shake out. If Trump is the man, he is the man and will do great job. So would most of the rest Republicans running. Even so, a weak OR a strong Conservative Third Party Candidate would be a colossal disaster with Hillary “the Snake” Clinton
winning the election with around 40% of the vote. We may as well pull the handle and Flush United States of America down the Tubes then.

    • MeForever

Whoa there… the NeoconZionistCommies are plunging USA down the toilet in every way they can… and want to replace it with their North America Union (NAU). Better check their secret weapon surprise Howard Schultz the Jew who will “step in” when Hillarious “steps out” – looks like she has simply been a placeholder, strawman till they unveil their prize attack on USA with their “kind” to take Presidency. WAKE UP WOOO WOOO WAKE UP AMERICANS!!!

  • Oingo Boingo

If he runs as Third Party candidate, the evil lesbian hag Hillaryous will become Head Zio Puppet In Chief and this afflicted nation will AGAIN go to war for the sole benefit of Israel and International Zionist jewry.

  • Walt

What concerns me is the fact that the Donald has yet to say one word about how he’s going to bring prosperity back to America. Also, if he runs a third party he’s allowing Hillary a sure win because as most of us know he’ll be splitting the Republican vote. We are all sick and tired of the same ole promises rhetoric and never seeing results. Trump is talking the talk, but I want to see him walk the walk. So far the Republican party is blowing the chance of holding Congress and the Senate because they haven’t achieved one thing since they won last election. They did the same thing some years back when they had it all and didn’t deliver. Myself, I’m sick of the RINO garbage and watching the GOP cater to a failed community organizer. I sure hope Trump is America’s knight in shining armor

  • rockthebenz

Trump is going to win the republican nomination so don’t worry about any third party run. This is the only person who will save our country…

  • Uncle Bob

Donald makes money ! And we need someone to put america to work ! He talks of the Illegals & I hope he’s talking deportation and before they get deported they should take Blood so we have DNA & we check that against ALL unsolved crimes then we will be safer Knowing who they are NOT who they say they are. DNA can tell US geographically where these people are from and just who their Families are Here “they will not be able to tell US mendacious Statements ” Don’t fall for government propaganda that says deportation is impossible and to costly because that’s Mendacious. Look at the Failed drug war this government continues to wage which is Disenfranchising Americans so don’t buy into this crap.

  • margo1942

i am in for voting trump, because we can see what we have now is not helping usa citizens . they are only working for foreigners and we the taxpayers are paying the bill.

  • Brady Harness

If the Republican Elitists keep strongly demonstrating that they will do nothing to STOP that Jack Ass in Our White House from making Our America a Leftist Home Land then as having been a Republican for the last 47 years I will most definitely Vote for the Donald; particularly if Dr. Ben Carson is on the ticket with him!!!

  • jdbixii

“Making a statement” by running third party is a waste of effort, money and time. Everybody knows that it is pointless to do so. Anyone, especially a savvy, business person, who would do that is supporting the idea that negative risks are worth taking. The fact is that conservatives are going to be here, believe what they believe and live by the principles to which they hold, regardless of what happens in the election. It is a simple fact. Are the media really worth the money that candidates waste on them, attempting to persuade people that they can really effectuate change which is resisted by the liberals?

  • tk-atty

It is true the establishment doesn’t like him, but if he wins they had better support him, because if they don’t we all lose, and it would show they are no different than the democrats and are only interested in the so called “PARTY” and not the American people. I will not vote for another Rino, everytime we do we lose.

  • VirgoVince

Trump is Trump, why the hell should it matter if he’s GOP or Independent??
If you like him, VOTE FOR him, if you don’t, you’re a brain damaged mentally challenged ugly stupid ignorant libprog idiot!
    Do what’s RIGHT for America!!!!

    • disqus_tKlEuAw2uq

The program with you statement is that you split the votes and let the democrats win that way. Why do people always have to call other people names if they do not think the that you want them to.

      • Brady Harness

Over the years and in particular since we swept the states and Our Congress in Nov. 2014 been uninterested in what is Good for Our America and instead are only interested in what is good for them and or the Mega Corporations that are slowly installing The New World Order!!!

    • I Seigel

That’s RIGHT! Do what’s right for America! Vote Trump – and give the election to Hilliary!

  • bobnstuff

Trump is going to sink the republican party to a point that it my never recover. I just hope someone starts playing hard ball back with him using facts, although I’m not sure the republicans would care since they seen to love to be lied to.

    • disqus_tKlEuAw2uq

I think Trump is helping the GOP he is at least making them face the facts about illegals and other issues. He is dead on about the illegals, trade and our business dealing with other countries.

      • bobnstuff

The facts don’t back up his statements on illegals, go check them out. We have not lost on the trade deals he is complaining about, check real numbers, NAFTA had little or no job lose that anyone can find. The new trade deal should improve things which is why congress gave the OK If you do nothing else go to faccheck.org and see what they have to say. He says what you want to believe not what is the truth.

  • Bill Blackstone

What is the percentage when he is in the primary? Let’s get him nominated! This is about when he looses. Let’s here about him winning and stop putting this negative crap out there. Stop printing when Trump is a loser he can still be a winner.

    • disqus_tKlEuAw2uq

You have to remember that the GOP do not want him, they want a RHINO like Bush. Trump can not be brought and he tells it like it is and the GOP is afraid of him.

      • Brady Harness

The GOP that we loved and worked for is quickly becoming History; we who always helped the GOP. have it would appear been betrayed by the Elitists of the party and we must show them that for the sake of Our America will no blindly follow like a flock of Stupid lambs!!!

      • Bill Blackstone

The GOP are not the Voters. They are lame duck politicians. Do not promote defeated as if it is acceptable. Don’t accept anything except the Republican nomination. If we except defeat before the elections it is do to lazy voters. BECAUSE. If he doesn’t win. We will get them when he is third party. NO SIR! Failure is not an option at any phase of this election. Our God. Our Country. Our Soldiers. The fix we are in now is not the Democratic parties fault. It’s the Republican party fault. Get off our lazy duffs. Car pool voters. Get excited. Get involved. The Dems know how to win. Republicans know how complain.

  • Gnowark

It depends upon who is chosen by GOP. If they will run McCain again, I’ll definiely vote Trump. If they run Rand Paul (or Santorum), then no. It could go much higher, or lower, but I very much prefer to have a choice (shades of Ross Perot).

    • Brady Harness

I would stay with the GOP if they would allow Dr. Ben Carson to carry the Ticket other wise it’s Yes Vote for The Donald!!!
