Donald Trump’s energy plan: Regulate less, drill more

by Matt Egan  |  published on May 27, 2016

Donald Trump has a simple formula to get America’s energy industry back on its feet: stop overregulation and start drilling a lot more for oil and gas.

In his first in-depth speech about energy policy, Trump on Thursday promised to make American energy “dominance” a strategic economic and foreign policy goal of the U.S.

“America’s incredible energy potential remains untapped. It’s a wound that is totally self-inflected,” Trump said during a speech at a North Dakota oil industry conference.

Trump, who earlier in the day had secured enough delegates to clinch the GOP nomination, warned that Democratic rival Hillary Clinton will make life tougher for the energy industry.

  • Robert Wilson

Gosh; even an ugly eigth grader could’ve figured this out eight years ago.

  • McFerguson

This is why we like Trump. He stands for something! He wants to “Make America Great Again” and in doing so he says his decisions will always be based on the idea of what is best for Americans. “American’s First” is the underpinning of that theme. Not illegal immigrants. Not the sorry defense posture of Europe, Japan or South Korea, but what is best for the American people in paying down our debt and bringing good manufacturing jobs back home. The GOP establishment, a bunch of weasels really, certainly won’t stand with the people who elected them out of fear of the liberal media. And I agree 100 percent with Trump’s decision on the XL Pipeline and to make fossil fuels the backbone of our drive for energy independence. Go Trumpster!

  • Kanawah

Trump’s plan would accelerate the destruction of the world.
Like all of his other “proposals”, it is thin on facts, and totally delusional.

    • reggie

      Please enlighten me.

  • Elaine Morris

I live in NE Texas. The first year Obama got into office, there was a small oil drilling company. Jack found oil. He bought all new equipment, hired people and began to drill. He spent a lot of $.

Obama stopped the oil drilling in Texas (I”m not sure about the other states). Obama decided we would get our oil from Brazil (George Soros Corp). The man lost everything.

  • Snoopy

Drill Baby Drill…. My sentiments exactly! We have enough oil right under our feet to supply this country’s needs for the next 300 years. SURELY by THAT time we will have long passed the need for it – one way or the other!

  • Robert Brumley

    Trump is absolutely right on.

  • thekidde

Apparently Donald has been glue sniffing – or, he’s just a short sighted idiot. Maybe both. What a draft dodging dickhead.

    • James

      Quit kiddle yourself

  • reggie

Wow! Hitlery’s $1million dollar troll group is out full force today. FYI, coal research has developed a new process that is extremely clean, and is being developed to the point that industry will be able to utilize it in the near future. Green fracking is also on the horizon. If she gets to be president, she’ll probably sell the other 80% of our uranium to Russia, close down the coal mines, which she’s already promised, close down the oil drilling, and bring in 100% Chinese solar energy with the help of harry reid’s son rory. Don’t forget her hubby sold military secrets to China in exchange for campaign funds. No I’m not going to prove it. If you’re too lazy to google it yourself, that’s not my problem.

Uhh, oil prices have dropped over the past two years and only recently have been increasing.

      …………………….Why?

Saudi Price Cut Upends Oil Market

Move Paves Way for Further Price Declines, Adds Pressure on U.S. Energy Producers

By NICOLE FRIEDMAN, BENOÎT FAUCON and SUMMER SAID – Nov. 3, 2014

      http://www.wsj.com/articles/sa

Oil prices tumbled to their lowest point in more than two years after Saudi Arabia unexpectedly cut prices for crude sold to the U.S., likely paving the way for further declines and adding to pressure on American energy producers.

The decision by the world’s largest oil exporter sent the Dow industrials into negative territory for the day amid concerns about the pace of global growth.

The move heightened worries over the resilience of the U.S. oil industry, which has expanded rapidly in recent years. But that growth, driven largely by new production technology used to extract oil from shale-rock formations, has never been tested by a prolonged slump in prices.

While lower crude prices generally help consumers by reducing the amount they pay for gasoline, analysts said falling energy prices will squeeze profit margins at many U.S. energy companies, particularly smaller firms or those with large debt loads.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia raised the prices for its oil in other locations, including Asia, where the country had cut its prices for four consecutive months.

    • reggie

Just one of many. Money talks.
“But the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation has accepted tens of millions of dollars in donations from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Algeria and Brunei — all of which the State Department has faulted over their records on sex discrimination and other human-rights issues.” “Saudi Arabia has been a particularly generous benefactor to the Clinton Foundation, giving at least $10 million since 2001, according to foundation disclosures. At least $1 million more was donated by Friends of Saudi Arabia, co-founded by a Saudi prince.”

The Saudis cut their price of crude oil to undercut the US and Canadian shale oil and tar sand oil production costs, and it worked.

Lol, Trump does not know WTF he is talking about!

It is about time that we have a president that takes care of the U.S. first.

    • thekidde

Oh, you must mean Bernie or even Hillary. Trump has been known throughout his life as taking care of himself first. Just ask his wives.

  • justinwachin

Energy independence can resolve many of our problems. It’s insane to enrich the countries who hate us by purchasing billions of dollars worth of oil from them. We can begin to reduce our federal debt by keeping energy dollars in the United States rather than sending them to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, Venezuela and the other oil exporters.

    • James

      Wise Man

  • 7papa7

Simple and excellent plan. It seems to follow Gingrich’s plan of drill baby drill. It will do several important things. First it will make us totally energy independent, secondly we will stop putting billions of dollars a year into governments that support terrorists and thirdly we can stop ALL blackmail from middle east countries to our friends and to us. There is no negative to doing this. Then you can pursue alternative energy but there would be no rush and NO government paying for it.

    • clifton

we have seen drill baby drill oil over 100 dollars and never seemed to have enough oil that was the con job of big oil. when oil drops America close there wells and sit on them

      • 7papa7

The restrictions and licenses for drilling have been a major obstacle to drilling. Any drilling that has increased has been on PRIVATE land. When the demand goes down and not as much oil is needed then the companies need to do something and closing down wells is one of the options. If the demand goes up then they will open up again. Obama is NOT in favor of being energy independent so he will do all within his power to make sure that his terrorist buddies will still get money from us.

        • PC Bob

Producing tar sands oil cost the oil companies a LOT more. So, when the world market price drops to less than they can produce it for, they have no option but to stop production. The Saudis know this , and play games with the prices. We should just say ‘screw them’ and take care of America first!

          • 7papa7

Absolutely America first, no other option is acceptable to me.

          • thekidde

Really? And who the fuck are you???

          • James

  • American Me

Drill Baby Drill…..Energy Independence is very important. If we want to buy oil we will be able to negotiate the best price. No more at the mercy of the Saudi’s.If Trump approves the Keystone XL Pipeline we can really wheel & deal.

    • bobnstuff

Oil independence but get oil from Canada, he does know Canada is not part of the US right. The only part of the Keystone Pipeline that hasn’t been built is the one linking Canada. I guess that Canadian oil isn’t going to the US so it really isn’t part of energy independence, We have a surplus of oil right now and Congress has lifted the rule on exporting. We have wells that are shut down because of low prices. I guess his followers will believe this song and dance once again.

      • AmericanBelle1

Where the hell do you get your information?! The US is sitting on more natural resources that the entire Middle East combined! Wells have been shut down because this administration has closed them down, forcing dependence on foreign countries! Big deal this corrupt administration has lifted exporting rules…we don’t have anything to export, dimwit! And what in the hell does the Keystone Pipeline and Canada have to do with Trump’s plan to deregulate and become independent? Song and dance my ass….kiss your own liberal butt goodbye if you think this country is going to put corrupt Hillary at the helm or go with Sanders and the Socialist States of America. Dream on.

        • bobnstuff

I don’t have a clue where you get your information but I get mine from places like the WSJ and other business news. Obama has shut down not one well and in fact he has opened up more land for drilling then most Presidents. $40 dollar a barrel oil is not worth drilling new wells for plus there is a surplus of oil on the market. They are having problems finding places to store it. We became energy independent two years ago. I guess you must get your news from the same place Trump does. Trump said he would build the Keystone pipeline. The Canadians have stopped even asking for it because sand tar oil cost to much to produce and isn’t profitable. The regulations are there for good reasons, greed out weighs the public good. I guess having rivers on fire and water you can’t drink is OK with you. I love how Hillary is corrupt but Trump bribing people is OK. The fact that he most likely paid less in taxes then you doesn’t bother you. He brags about ripping people off and you think he is great. Is it alright with you if I buy something or have you do work for me and then I don’t pay you what I said I would. Trump thinks that’s just good business. In this speech he proved he doesn’t understand the energy market or what is happening in the world.

      • CharlieSeattle

Trump does not know WTF he is talking about!

I didn’t express an opinion on the subject. I said only that Trump knows more than you do. I know that studying global markets is what Trump does, and he does it very well. I trust his judgment and knowledge.

I’m afraid Trump is an empty head. Thus far he has not iterated a single “plan”, only vague promises of wonderfulness. Typical of an empty-headed, daddy rich, shirt who knows nothing about anything outside his little circle of sycophants.
