Draft Romney?

by Philip Rucker and Robert Costa  |  published on November 13, 2015

Less than three months before the kickoff Iowa caucuses, there is growing anxiety bordering on panic among Republican elites about the dominance and durability of Donald Trump and Ben Carson and widespread bewilderment over how to defeat them.

Party leaders and donors fear that nominating either man would have negative ramifications for the GOP ticket up and down the ballot, virtually ensuring a Hillary Rodham Clinton presidency and increasing the odds that the Senate falls into Democratic hands.

The party establishment is paralyzed. Big money is still on the sidelines. No consensus alternative to the outsiders has emerged from the pack of governors and senators running, and there is disagreement about how to prosecute the case against them. Recent focus groups of Trump supporters in Iowa and New Hampshire commissioned by rival campaigns revealed no silver bullet.

  • Faithful American

We do NOT need to call in Romney: we ALREADY have the BEST candidate: Ted Cruz!

  • Brad Bryant

    Romney? Another losing campaign? Really?

  • DOC

    Rommey REALLY

  • SDofAZ

The GOP and the Dems just don’t get the message no matter who and how often the rinos and dem wits get their butts handed to them with the voters. This will legitimize with the silent majority a need for a third party. It is time for a party that does represent the legal citizens of this country. Go Trump!

  • Dorothy Svelmoe

Trump out and the establishment gets another puppet to do their dirty work!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elect Trump 2016 and “Make America Great Again”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kurt Hanssen

Romney got strickt order to newer mention that NObama is a muslim, but the liberals used that Romney was a Mormon agenst him, and then the majority leader anounsed that Romney was a tax cheat. witch was a lie. The liberals did not vin fair and square, but Soros wanted a gripp on this country, and hi got it.

    1. The United States is not a Christian nation, and the Bible is not the cornerstone of our law. George Washington: “If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.” (Letter to the United Baptist Chamber of Virginia, May 1789)
    2. The Pledge of Allegiance was written by a socialist.
    3. The first president to propose national health insurance was a Republican.
    4. Ronald Reagan once signed a bill legalizing abortion.
    5. Reagan raised federal taxes eleven times.
    6. Roe v. Wade was a bipartisan ruling made by a predominantly Republican-appointed Supreme Court.
    7. The Federal Reserve System was a Republican invention.
    8. The Environmental Protection Agency was, too.
    9. Obama has increased government spending less than any president in at least a generation.
    10. President Obama was not only born in the United States, his roots run deeper in American history than most people know.

    • bobnstuff

Be careful they don’t like facts here. Do you find it funny that to of the front runners are Cubans?

    • Peatro Giorgio

I suggest instead of opening your complete ignorance for all the world to review . You might wish to read in its entirety Gen. George Washington’s Farewell Speech given to congress. He clearly defined in that speech the very moral ethical foundation of our nation governed By men of faith. And how the nation is best served. You my friend are truly the most ignorant of ignorant individuals , I have ever been blessed with the opportunity to prove just how ignorant you are. There is not a word in all of the world’s languages, strong enough to define your ignorance.

  • holyblood1

Sounds like to me the media and the other runners are afraid they wont be able to get by with their normal corrupt government acts if one of these guys get in, and everyone better hope that Hillary don’t get in because if so it will be the same old evil if not worse.

  • Richard Schwartz

We have two countries. The USA and DC. Seems never the two meet. If you are in the USA you are forced to live within your means, if not you will when the “good life” money runs out. Now to DC. Here you make great money and have the good life. Parties where you make deals to gain power and money. Cost of things mean nothing to you. Read recently the EPA desk cost was $700.00. Remember the toilet seat and the hammer? I went to Officemax and priced a desk. Best one was $495.00. We elect assholes to congress who could care less. Think we need a change. Politicians from both parties could care less. Think we need new people?

    • marshmil

I think you meant “could NOT care less” in both places. 🙂

    • Peatro Giorgio

I understand what it is your attempting to express how ever. Do not compare the crap furniture office max sells to the quality furniture. Those in congress are buying . Office Max crap you’d be lucky if it last 1 year before the crap falls apart. Might as well buy it from unclaimed freight. They sell the same crap but for a whole lot less then office max.

  • wattsupstupid

    NO, NO, NO

  • OnlyTruthFirst

If they put up Romney, it is definitely time for a Third party and the end of the Republican party. Give the American people a choice and I believe the time has come to send a message to both elite parties.

    • Robert Early

If the elite establishment nominates Romney, then the 2016 election is lost; and a new American Party will be formed.

  • dmttbt

The republican party or should I say the right wing of the organized crime party and the democrats are the left wing had better get their heads out of their a ss and do what the people dictate for a change. Does anyone think that they will be able to ignore the fact that two people who are not politicians are winning the race? Do they not have any idea why? We will possibly get to see if our elections are fare and honest. I have had doubts about that for a long time. I was for Romney when that was lesser of the evils running. he did a magnificent job in the first debate. Obama didn’t know whether to sh it or wind his watch. The second one however had been set up. The woman asking the questions swore to a lie and then later and I don’t mean during the debate she changed her mind. Obama and honesty are so far apart they don’t even acknowledge each other. Thirty or forty years of lying and stealing from the American people will someday catch up to them and I certainly hope it is soon. Do Not stay at home and not vote. If Trump or Carson is the one you want and they are denied the republican nomination because of the crooked party, let them know by writing in their name and voting for them anyway. I suspect the parties will do away with write ins by the time the elections come around. They have stopped putting the party of the candidates on the ballots.

    • The Redhawk

U are an IDIOT with the capacity to post many sentences while SAYING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! How much is SLICK and Cankles Paying you to do their bidding???

      • holyblood1

Shows what you know Redhawk he is right.

        • The Redhawk

It will be hard someday to WAKE up and REALIZE that YOU are STUCK on STUPID for life… But hey life is not always fair…

    • Peatro Giorgio

First let’s make this completely clear. Leave the right wing out of your ranting. . The true right wing of the Republican base has been doung the peoples work voting for the nation’s people’s Proactive ‘ s for years now. It is the rino’s which if you do not know ,who or what they are. They are the so called moderates and liberals of the party who have been lying an ripping & jacking us off for over 100 years. They are the very equal of the evil demo rat scum. Only the rino’s wear the moniker of republican. But they are not republican s . What they are is interloping, lying, cheating demo-rats.

  • carlton goodson

If you don’t want the Whitehouse run Romney or Jeb or Rubio Its no outsider time!

    • Peatro Giorgio

It is Time for the outsiders. Cruz,Carson Carly an Trump. These are the only four who will truly change the direction of this nation. To choose Any other Candidate, is frankly more of the same, Less Money IN YOUR Pocket ,Less Personal FREEEDOM , MORE BIG goverment, MORE Poor People , Less Tax payers. Less health care less medicaid. Less medicare. Less of everything except much more tyrannical government. Your a complete idiot if you still believe in either of the establishment parties. Or their candidates.

      • carlton goodson

        typo the word (no)

      • bobnstuff

You do know Cruz is not an outsider. He has never had a non government job and his wife works on Wall St.. A big mouth does not make you an outsider. The other day he said that the congress was exempt from the ACA but a few months ago he signed up for it himself. It’s those little things that add up.

        • Peatro Giorgio

Dam I pity your poor parents, they must be embarrassed knowing they raised such a simpleton. Do you know why Cruz signed up for the ACA.?? I’ll tell you . It was because he desired first to prove to the nation that all of Congress was being hypocritical, and he did not wish to be placed in their company. Further more . If Cruz is such the insider, why is it then that both Establishments despise the man so vigorously. ??? I’LL tell you! It’s ‘ because the man refuses at ever turn, every opportunity to completely reject playing their game, he refuses becoming one of the liars thieves. There is no more honest, honorable man Then Senator Ted Cruz. As the solicitors General of the great state of Texas . He appeared 9 times before the Us supreme court on behalf of the people of Texas an the US. It was an appointed position. I would suggest before you post another comment about Senator Ted Cruz . You do some do diligence, and read some non partisan Back ground about the man. Repeating partisan talking points won’t win you any favors. It only makes you appear the fool.

          • bobnstuff

Tell me about his jobs on the outside of government. Just because he doesn’t get along with people doesn’t make him an outsider. Congress has to get their insurance from the ACA, if they get government insurance, it’s part of the law. He has gone to the SCOUS on the part of the government of Texas which he was employed by. tell me about all the little people he has defended against the government.

          • Peatro Giorgio

You have truly proven yourself to be as ignorant as had originally believed. Through both Administration actions and Congressional actions. Congress is exempt from the A.C.A. There just isn’t fixing stupid an my friend your living proof. Yes as the law had been written congress and all of its aids were ,repeat were required to sign up for the A.C.A. Remember The word is WERE. but . That is not the case and it has not been so for over 2 years now. Pull your Ostrich head out of that hole in the ground. Wake up.

          • bobnstuff
          • Peatro Giorgio

Okay So your assumption that by posting links to well known progressive websites . I should fall for that.and then having read such trash except it as Gospel. Really whoa your reaching truly low. Clue #1 I’m a Fiscal conservative, libertarian leaning independent voter..Who neither except or believes 1/4 % of partisan crap’ola posted on most Web pages. If you’re more incline to utilize partisan postings. Well my friend you have lost the war of words before the first engagement has even begun. Please try aging . This time however post some factual links.

          • bobnstuff

            Fox News,
Starting in 2014, all 100 U.S. senators, 435 representatives in the House and their aides will have to get their health insurance through ObamaCare’s newly formed state exchanges. But they won’t see a spike in their health care costs under a deal struck before the August recess.

Congressional leadership aides tell Fox News a deal has been reached with the Office of Personnel Management, which will allow the government to continue to make employer contributions to the health plans of lawmakers and congressional staffers.

The OPM, which oversees the compensation system for the federal civilian workforce, is expected to issue guidance next week to spell out a way to fix the issue.

Lawmakers and their staff currently select their health insurance plan from the pool of health care policy options that are available to all federal employees. Under ObamaCare, they will be required to purchase their insurance from the state-run exchanges.
Is this one right wing enough?
Now once again tell me about Teds non government jobs and his work on the outside of government.

          • Peatro Giorgio

BOBANSTUFF read your own posting very carefully. Note the portion stating contributions. Office of personal management. Which will allow the government to make employer contribution to the health plans of law makers and aids. Are you not a private citizen. Are you receiving company provided contribution . If you are they will end in 2016 or a bit later . However all union workers are completely except up till 2016-2017 and Federal office holders. Are exempt from having to pay the entire contribution to their health care. No one pays my health care . But me that is it.. I assume you to pay your own . Therefore you are neither technical right or even remotely close to being correct . They are not paying for their health care. They are not paying the premiums they are not paying the deductibles . My friend . Read more carefully before you make another false claim. That one short paragraph say it all.

          • bobnstuff

Did they not say that they are not exempt from the law? Yes they get a contribution from their employer as do most people who get insurance through their employer. They are not exempt. http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/03/25/cruz-vs-obamacare-itll-be-nice-to-have-a-president-who-obeys-the-law-for-a-change/
Now tell me how someone who has only work to the government is an outsider.

          • Peatro Giorgio

Yes They often say things with little or no meaning. However there what had not been said is to what end what date those federal contributions would end. Simple stayed is exemption with out saying so. READ AN A BIT OF CRITICAL THINKING GOES ALONG WAYS. They do give specific dates by which private employers either bring their health care coverage in line with that required by the ACA. WHICH MEANS THOSE PRIVATE PERSON OR CORPORATIONS ARE TO PUSH THEIR EMPLOYEES IN TO THE ACA. WHICH IS NOW TRULY KNOWN AS THE NOT AFFORDABLE NO CARE HEALTH CARE ACT.

          • Peatro Giorgio

Great link . However it is obvious to even the most oblivious. You my friend had not read the entire link . Note 3rd paragraph last 2 sentences. The special crave out for the political connected which exempts them . My O My caught in a lie by your very own link provided.
Now on to how one may or might be considered an outsider when he or she has only worked in government. That my friend is one if not the easiest question to answer. 1st. look to how that individual performed while at their duties. HONOR, morally, ethically, INTEGRITY HONESTY. That is Senator Ted Cruz. 2nd. did he conform to the wims, of those he worked with. Did he use his or her position, for personal gain. Not Senator Ted Cruz. 3rd. Did he or she use their position to help , assist, those of lesser means what ever that assistance maybe. Hell yes that is Senator Ted Cruz. 4th. Did he or she place advancement ,protect insiders his or her coequals or superiors. Over the interest of the public. Hell no Not Senator Ted Cruz. And That my friend is why Everyone can honestly look at Senator Ted Cruz as a true outsider . Who knows the skeletons in the closet of all the insiders. He worked among’st them but never became one of them. That is exactly why DC hates him why the establishment elite despise him and have abandoned him. That is why ever hard working American can trust him and should support him
” An outsider working for us on the inside. “

    • Robert Early

Oh sure. Draft Romney. That will guarantee the election of Clinton or Sanders, which is exactly what the elitist, RINOs want. People, our ranks are filled with the enemy. Open your eyes.

  • Webb

    2010…Conservatives voted, Results, Zero!
    2014…Conservatives voted, Results, Zero!
We Voted for Romney in 2012, We Lost, Results, More of the Same!
    No Romney…People held their votes!
2016…Republican Elites should not make our Decision, have we not had enough of Zero Results in D.C., You Make The Choice!!

  • robb1952

Keep things the same and grow worse – let Romney in; it you want to STOP Hillary and the liberal thugs and put the United States back on the road to recovery – keep up the support for Trump, Carson and Cruz. The ‘change’ America was promised by the current occupant of the White House has been one of doom, destruction, erosion of constitutional rights, racism on the rise, immorality at an ALL TIME HIGH and more corruption in government. If this is what the Rino’s want…TOO BAD, America is sick of the current atmosphere and we want REAL CHANGE! It won’t happen with Romney, Bush, Rubio, Christie or any of the other establishment republicans. Also, while we are at it we need to continue to CLEAN UP CONGRESS in both the House and Senate. For starters John McCain can go, along with McConnell, Graham, just to name a few. Cut ’em loose!

    • dmttbt

I hear that it is not the time for that every time there is an election. it is the time for that. It is time to vote for the person who can actually do what they say they will. Obama said what he would do and the republicans have helped him destroy our country. I am not talking about just in the pest few years I am talking about in the last 30 or 40 years. We are to stupid to see we have been sold out for a very long time. Why is it that the supposedly greatest country in the world can’t afford a fence with high voltage not a wall around our country because we don’t have the money. We don’t have the money for at least 18 trillion dollars worth of things we do. it is called counterfeit and that is what this country has been running on. Why not spend a little to save an enormous amount. Obama said the 9 trillion dollar deficit we had when he was running the first time was a shame and unacceptable. He has now changed that to 18- 20 trillion and Juan Williams on Fox news when asked about that said that was said in a campaign and that doesn’t mean anything. HELLO!

  • Rich

Just what we need to finish off the country. Another Rhino in the pocked of New World Order.

  • oldvinnie

He gave up. Drop it! Don’t be stupid again.

    • dmttbt

He was also the pre Obama care master and would not admit that is a piece of crap. All these plans they have come up with would be in real life classified as a Ponzi scheme.

  • 7papa7

This just shows how screwed up the elitists are. The fact that they would even consider drafting a 2 time loser RINO is just the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Why they want to hook there wagon to a loser is beyond me but once you are stuck on stupid I guess you can never get off of that status.

  • The Redhawk

well Since DA DONALD has REACHED ‘ CRITICAL MASS” and is Beginning to IMPLODE….Might as well think of a Possibility to get a grown up to run….

    • Peatro Giorgio

A grown up what do you mean a guy who pussed out when things got to tough for him. ” Really” You wish a wimp lead this nation a liberal wimp at that right. ” Hell NO ” if the republican establishment trys to screw Donald . Guess what third party here we go . I am personally voting for Senator Ted Cruz However
If Ted doesn’t receive the nomination. I would vote for Donald Trump , Dr. Ben Carson or Carly Firino. No one else. I an many I happen to associate with ,fellowship with , an work with . They to have also stated clearly they will not vote for a establishment, candidate no matter who the demo-rats nominated. They to will just stay home . We have all made it a point , taken a vow to stand against the Establishments . They are no longer going to override the people . It’s our time to screw them over as they have been screwing the electorate over for years. F them, an the chamber of commerce, and the to big to fail banks and all their large corporate an private donor’s.

    • dmttbt

I don’t want to judge if someone is a grown up or not on the amount of their success but if the shoe fits wear it. You speak of grown ups and e have the organized crime party as the democrats and republicans. We have a self proclaimed Muslim 2 term president who has with the help of the republicans destroyed our economy and you want a grown up. Where I am located huge houses and buildings are being built on top of each other and the people I know think that is prosperity. No that is yes you can get a job but when it is built there is nothing. The other thing about that is these huge houses and buildings have to be bought by someone or leased by someone but who will be able to afford it? This is a bubble just like all the other bubbles we have had. The government in it’s infinite wisdom creates these bubbles and then reality sets in. The government can not control the weather and they cannot control global warming that is now called climate change because the facts did not support the lies and before the global warming we had global cooling. Had we not had Al G we would have not been spending billions on something they say they can predict 100 years in advance and can’t predict it a week in advance. The cash for clunkers wiped a whole section of the used car industry. Those who could only afford a car in that section were forced to buy over their price range or do without. I don’t see where there should be a big celebration over that. The Obama care has turned out to be exactly what it’s critics said it would be. People were not being denied healthcare, they can get it now but they can’t afford it. When were they better off The doctors and hospitals charged everyone else more to cover what they spent on the poor. There was less handling charge than when you send it to Washington for them to handle. When and what has the government done that didn’t also have a reverse and proportional reaction?

      • The Redhawk
