Moving Pieces: GOP alliances shift in bids to block, boost Trump

by
March 18, 2016

Donald Trump’s emergence as the big fish in a now-tiny pool of three remaining Republican presidential candidates has touched off a remarkable scramble by political powerbrokers to quickly choose sides, all while talk of a potential independent run isn’t going away.

The feverish effort to either boost or block Trump is leading to unexpected alliances as some hitch their name to the GOP front-runner, and others do whatever they can to try and thwart him. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a former candidate who previously had backed Jeb Bush, was the latest surprise, announcing Thursday he’s now banking on Ted Cruz.

Graham bluntly acknowledged he prefers Ohio Gov. John Kasich – but said only Texas Sen. Cruz has a path to defeating Trump in the primary.

“If we give the banner of the Republican Party to Donald Trump, we tarnish it, maybe, forever. That might be the end of the Republican Party as we know it,” warned Graham, who plans to hold a fundraiser for the Texas senator.

On the sidelines, a trio of conservative leaders also held a meeting in Washington Thursday to discuss a “stop-Trump” strategy. As first reported by Politico, Erick Erickson, the founder of RedState.com, was joined by former adviser to President George. W. Bush Bill Wichterman, and South Dakota businessman Bob Fischer.

    Do you really like Trump?
I thought you would be more interseted in Sen Cruz.
He is the outsider fighting “The Establishment”.
Have you gone to tedcruz.org ? It’s all there, check it out, I think you’ll think twice about him. He actually has a plan all laid out, in print for all to see.
He’s the good guy; and he doesn’t whine! I can’t stand whiners!
He has done everything he said he would do.
He is only one in a “body” of RINO voters.
I believe he has the foreign policy skills Trump lacks.
Mr Trump said he would remain neutral on Israel???
We need a Constitutional Conservative as POTUS, I believe Sen Cruz is our man.
Just my opinion based on knowing his backround 😉

  • Benjamin Michel

I think the people will raise so much hell that they should change there though and get behind Mr Trump before it is to late. If the people behind Trump does NOT vote we will know who will be the president Hillary

  • Abel

Graham, a RINO, says if they allow Trump to be the GOP candidate the GOP will no longer be the GOP “as he know it.” That would be a good thing. The GOP as he knows it is a good old boys club of Socialist traitors to the USA and it needs to be brought back to sanity or replaced by a good party that cares about the country rather than their own butts being reelected.

  • Terry T

Lindsey Graham and his cohorts are the ones who have tarnished the Republican Party – not Donald Trump. The Republican party has not accomplished anything since Ronald Reagan. Trump is right , they are- “all talk and no action”.

  • Pegasus

If the GOP progressive (communist) RINOs do not give you the nomination, then run INDEPENDENT!

  • Walter Flatt

  • Kathy Sessler

    No, y’all are fools.
It will be the end of all the corrupt politicians, corrupt bankers, corrupt big pharmas, corrupt corporations, corrupt lobbyists, corrupt government agencies, corrupt business persons, ie; George Soros and the Koch Brothers and more, corrupt “Radical Groups”, ie; Black Lies Matters”, “Movingon”, etc., etc., etc..

You see pinheads, this last little “dirty trick” – (of sending a “death threat” to one of Mr. Trump’s sons) – , whomever is/was responsible, just guaranteed Mr. Trump the nomination and Presidency!
The people are wise to y’all! Stop the bull crap and do what is right for the American People!

If I was as wealthy as Mr. Trump. My whole being, and part of my wealth, would be in catching the perpetrator(s) of this FELONY. And then I would use every legal means at my disposal to make her/him spill their guts on “WHO” committed this crime. There would be no place on this earth the person, or persons, could hide. I would first make a TV ad explaining what happened. Then I would tell “How much $$$” I would give for reliable information!
Y’all would be surprised as who your freinds really are when a great deal of money is involved to turn in the asswipe who did this “dirty little trick!”
I hope Mr. Trump reads my idea.

  • Thomas

If the do nothing Republicans who have had control of the house and the senate for the past years, their supporters and the news media try to steal the nomination from either Trump or Cruz I will not vote for a single Republican for the house or the senate. The citizens do not adhere to the so called rules they establish to rob us of our choices. I don’t really care who gets the nomination but it should be the citizens of the United States who make the decision.

  • daanerud

Sen. Lindsey Graham and his other RINO members have tainted the GOP.
No suprise he would back Ted Cruz.
    RINO,s stick together.
    Their leader, Mitch McConell.

  • YOLADANE

The SCUM is rising to the top. The TRAITORS all want TRUMP gone don’t they. Now does ANYBODY really think they are worried about the country ?? People like Graham and the rest of the RATS are lower than even Obama and the rest of the COMMUNISTS. AT least Obama and the other RATS are up front about DESTROYING AMERICA as we once knew it. People like Graham pretend to care about the country while they go right along with the destruction. What a PATHETIC bunch of SNAKES. GO DONALD !!!!!!

  • skHurricane

Mitt Romney is a fraud. Who cares who he votes for. I will not vote for Ted Cruz or anyone else if they block him from getting the nomination. The elites want Hillary Clinton as President. Now Americans see what they are doing. STAND UP and let’s notlet them get away with it!!!! Get out and vote for DONALD TRUMP!!!!

  • RUS

WHO THE HELL DOES LINDSEY GRAHAM THINK HES IS. HE CERTAINLY ISN’T ANY HERO IN MY BOOK.WHAT HAS HE EVER DONE.

    • joe

      Nothing !

  • nodo

Do the Trumpers have any concern for this country at all or are they just bitter and angry and want to destroy rather than build. It seems obvious Cruz is the only actual conservative in the running. Trump, with all his liberal leanings, needs to know if things do not work out in the WH, he cannot simply declare bankruptcy and all is good again.

    • Rosa Ergas

Not that I love Trump, Rubio or Kasish would have been my favorite ones, but since Rubio lost, and Kasish will not make it to the presidency, my choice will have to be Trump. Cruz I don’t like at all, not even his party likes him!!!!!
In reference to Trump, and his bankrupsies, this is always done by business people. Not unusual, not illegal. Obama had a PERFECT RECORD, and look where he took us. Would you like Hillary instead ??????? Not only a lieyer, but also compromised the security of the USA. Look what she did in Bengazi, and the topping on the tragedy, was lieying to the parents of the victims in the embassy. She is a real bad choice!!!!!! May G d bless and protect the USA !!!!!!!

      • nodo

We are all unhappy about the way the Republican party has catered to Obama for the past 8 years, and you are upset because “his party does not like Cruz”? Why, because he fights for what we have been wanting the GOP to fight for these past 8 years? He does what he says and does not change his opinion with the tide. People keep saying they don’t like Cruz, but never have I heard why they don’t like him. Admittedly he does not have the charisma of a Reagan, but he does have honor and integrity. That is more important to me in a president than just saying what the gang wants to hear as Trump seems to do. Trump is a good communicator, I’ll give him that, but not in the good way. Can you name one policy Trump has talked about that he has not waffled on already? I do not think he can beat Hillary, though. Too many people according to the polls just cannot abide him, me included.

        • Rosa Ergas

I will not vote for Cruz, because it is “his way or the highway”. There are situations, when you need to come to an agreement, and meet somewhere along the line . I don’t think he will be a good president, not that I believe any of them would be, with the exception of Kasish. By the way, Obama took the garbage previous presidents left. Now, he is leaving a greater mess. He does not wait for the senate to agree with him, he just does it!!!

          • nodo

Sorry, did not realize you were a typical establishment RINO (if you are republican at all and not democrat). No use any further discussion. Should have realized sooner. My mistake, Will just continue to support Cruz and let you RINOs go for the Trump gambit. Good day to you.

          • Rosa Ergas

            To you too.

    • donemyhomework

Why don’t you go out and ask them? I could tell you that I am sick and tired of having people in office that do the opposite of what the hell I think is right. Our government is out of control. They don’t consider the will of the people at all and haven’t for two decades. And you nodo, do you have any concern for this country? Have you done your research? No. I can tell by your question.

      • nodo

Probably know more about it than you do obviously. Cruz is the only one in the senate ready to take on the Washington mob in their own front yard so to speak. He has proven himself over and over in that regard. Yes the government is out of control, but not Cruz’ fault. Why do you think he won so overwhelmingly in Texas, the people who know him best? The will of the people is what he is fighting for. He has already said he would support Trump if he got the nomination even though he knows what a disaster he would be as president. You are angry about the state of the country; well so am I and so is Cruz and his supporters. But we want to do something constructive not just stir up an angry bunch of people who seemingly care nothing about the issues or Trump’s stance on them since he is very reluctant to discuss them. I sympathize with your anger, but don’t you want to know a little about what kind of president he would be? No, I suppose not. Trumpers are understandably angry and emotionall but low on common sense it seems to me.

        • donemyhomework

Wrong. For one thing, he doesn’t know anything about Muslims or Islam. Has he ever worked at anything other than being a Politician or a lawyer? No. So he has no real world experience. Has he ever created jobs? No. The most he can be is a bureaucrat. Does he have any management skills? No. .His stance on the borders and illegal immigration is putrid. BLM disrupts one of Trump’s rallies and Cruz blames Trump for it. Cruz has his head up his ass and has no idea as to what is really happening in America. I see Cruz side with the establishment. The establishment that is out of control, almost renegade…they are renegade and have been for the past 20 years plus. Cruz doesn’t care about America just his credentials.
How is he going to take on the Washington mob? Cruz did not accomplish anything, all he got done is contesting. Texas is his home state, if he can’t even win his home state he’d be pretty limp. And what pray tell leads you to believe that Trump would be a disaster in office? I doubt if you know anything about Trump to be able to make ANY educated decision. It sounds like you figure all Trump supporters are idiots that just want to stir up Trouble. Never been to one of his rallies, I have. Damned fine people all of them. And they definitely care about what happens in America. The knowledge and experience Trump brings to the table far outstretches the attributes of any one of the other candidates, or a combination thereof. Just one asset in particular NEGOTIATION SKILLS is worth it’s weight in gold. I know, I was in sales, and real estate.
I will give you credit, you are passionate. Don’t get me wrong, Cruz stands qualified. Dr. Carson stands qualified. The candidates as a whole stand qualified…except Hillary and Sanders. Hillary is sleeping with the Muslims and getting a lot of money from them. Sanders is a Socialist. He should be tarred and feathered and left in the stocks. My father is turning in his grave at the thought of the Democrats and what they want for America.
Yes! Yes! I know exactly what kind of president Mr. Trump would be. I’ve studied 8 to 12 hours a day 7 days a week since the beginning of the campaign. I definitely know who and what I’m voting for. Would he be perfect…No. Attributes are just that… attributes, Is Mexico and China complaining hell yes. They do not want to lose their gravy train.
And Obama, if Obama died today it wouldn’t be soon enough. I will celebrate big time when Obama is dead. I don’t care how it happens.
Vote for who you want, My vote is for Trump.

          • nodo

You are again mouthing canned words. Trump knows more about muslims than Cruz? Where did you get that harebrained idea? Has Trump created jobs. Oh yeah, then he goes bankrupt and loses them and goes on to create more and lose more. But who cares, its legal isn’t it? Do you even know Trump’s stance on illegal immigration since he seems to change his mind with the tide. Yes, left wingers are to blame for a large part of the lawlessness at Trump rallies, but he does encourage it you cannot deny — offering to pay legal fees if his supporters will punch them out, etc. And what makes you think Cruz is part of the establishment? Yes he got elected to government by the people of Texas (something Trump has yet to do), but he went there and fought the establishment at every turn. Why do you think they fight him so hard? He did win his home state by a large margin by the way. Just where do you get your facts, the Trump handbook of lies? Oh well, when people just love to believe lies, what can you do. Go for it. It must be something about the blind leading the blind, but I wish you would not try to lead us all into the ditch!

          • donemyhomework

First off, I’ve gained the evidence to prove you’re a troll. You don’t know anything about business, you don’t know anything about real estate, Obviously you don’t know anything about Management. You don’t really know anything about Cruz. If Cruz is your guy, do you know anything about his voting record? Does he even show up for work? And obviously you don’t know anything about what’s going on in the background. Your world is so small.
Bankruptcy. One of his Companies out of a hundred owned at the time has to file bankruptcy…that’s a tactical move, not a personal bankruptcy. Do you know the difference…no. Oh, and it happened four times in a fifty year career. That’s a miracle, not something to be condemned. Do you know anything about Corporations…I doubt it. You are so far behind the curve as to background knowledge, I can’t believe it.
Talking about a ditch, you are so entrenched in your own monocular ignorance to realize that 90% of your drive is nothing more than blind emotionalism. Hell, you’d make a great Hillary voter…a lot of them don’t know who was president before Obama, or which state Mount Rushmore is in, or who is the capital of our Country named after.

          • nodo

You must be a Trump clone. you sound just like him. When you have no facts, you rely on insults you know nothing about. Go on raving mad person, I will no reply again to such a drone.

          • donemyhomework

Great, it’s a mutual disagreement. Stalemate.

  • ccannon

Blocking Trump will be the effective end of the Republican Party and it will also be the end of the country! Hillary as president will finish the wrecking job that Obama has embarked on!

    • Walter Flatt

TRUMP CAN ALWAYS SWITH TO A THIRD OR FORTH PARTY, AND TAKE ALL HIS REPUBLICANS WITH HIM AND PULL IN ENOUGH PEOPLE FROM ALL PARTIES AND COLOR TO BE ELECTED. THEIR ARE ENOUGH INTELLIGENT PEOPLE OF ALL PARTIES AND COLOR TO ELECT DONALD TRUMP.

      • Abel

The hell of it is, popular vote doesn’t elect the president, electors do, and that is what worries me; electors can be bought off, and probably already have been!

  • paulyz

Let’s see: The Establishment wants Kasich now. Sen. Grahamnesty wants Cruz. The Leftist Democrat Party fears Trump. MILLIONS of American Voters want Trump! EASY CHOICE for Liberty, TRUMP!!!

If they Stop Trump, they Choose Hillary, because the Republican Party will be TOAST!

  • carlton goodson

They need to know that blocking Trump will be the end of the party for ever!

    • Sherylynne

Absolutely…and the third loss in a row for the Republican Party!!!

  • TexasTeddy

TOTALLY agree with your every word, Patriot53!!! I wish EVERYONE had heard Rush Limbaugh today; look him up and read his words very carefully…

  • Patriot53

The Republicans are not trying to “stop Trump”, they are trying to keep the will of the people from being heard. The Republican party has been leaning so far in the direction of the Democrats for so long that I just call them Republicrats. So, Mr. Graham, the Republican party “as we know it” ended long ago but those in power can’t see it, all they know is that they want to stay in power. The condition of the country is not their primary concern.
