A White House official emailed some reporters to say that President Obama’s team met today to discuss the ongoing situation on Ukraine. It appears President Obama did not attend.

“The President’s national security team met today to receive an update on the situation in Ukraine and discuss potential policy options. We will provide further updates later this afternoon,” reads the full statement.

  • CforUS says:

“National Security Team.” Why on earth would he expose himself to inferiors? He should draft a strongly worded letter, or just pick up the phone and explain to Putin that he’s not following the Obama Plan. That’ll take care of everything.

  • .madashell says:

His absence can be attributed to a fear of facing Putin.
It was all he could do to read his most recent threat to Putin. Knowing that he has pi–ed the Russian leader off, he does not want to give him the opportunity to laugh in his face or maybe even spank him.

Worse than that: Whale chit in chief. Ya can’t’s get’s any lower than whale chit.

  • David Hendrick Behrens says:

Obama ignores crisis in Ukraine, missing a NS team meeting, because he doesn’t consider that very serious or important enough, so he can’t be bothered again. But if it starts to get very serious and important, you can tell then, when Obama goes into hiding and then sneaks off to Vegas and Hollywood again, as he did in the Benghazi Massacre attack,

    1. David in MA says:

this fraud is protecting his muslim brothers. and if he don’t know what is going on, he is not to be blamed. Not my fault……

  • I Seigel says:

The news report also said that, at the time of the meeting, he was conferencing with world leaders by phone. Probably just as important, if not more important, than the meeting itself.

And, by the way, the options that were presented to him as a reaction to this Russian action were, basically, the same options that were presented to W when Russia invaded Georgia to “protect” South Ossetia during the Bush Administration. Meaning, there were and are no good options. Bush’s hands were tied, and so are Obama’s. Is it in OUR national interest to have a military confrontation with Putin over this? When even NATO can’t get its act together? Where’s the overriding threat to the US? Who gets Russia’s oil and natural gas? And don’t forget, the Bush Administration was also trying to downsize the military at that time, for budget and strategic reasons.

I hope that Obama acts on the warnings he issued, that “there will be costs”. This was the same warning that Bush issued. But really, nothing happened then and I hope things will be different this time. We’ll see.

    1. George2g says:

If I remember correctly there may be a significant difference. During the Bush Admin there was no agreement between our countries to defend the Ukraine if it were invaded. Obummer entered into the agreement based on the Ukraine’s commitment to give up their nuclear weapons. I may be in error and you might wish to to dispute this if you have knowledge contrary. Oh by the way there is no excuse for this fraud of a resident.

      1. I Seigel says:

You’re referring, I believe, to the Budapest Memorandum of 1994. It was an agreement between Russia (Boris Yeltsin), the US (Bill Clinton) and the UK (John Major). Here is a key paragraph:

“The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defence or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.”

It also states that no country will use the threat of economic action or interference. Which, apparently, Russia violated back in November when Ukraine was about to sign the trade pact with the EU.

There was also the Nato-Ukraine Charter on a Distinctive Partnership of 1997. A key paragraph:

“NATO Allies will continue to support Ukrainian sovereignty and independence, territorial integrity, democratic development, economic prosperity and its status as a non-nuclear weapon state, and the principle of inviolability of frontiers, as key factors of stability and security in Central and Eastern Europe and in the continent as a whole.”

And there were also the Helsinki Accords of 1975.

All of which might have given residents in Kiev the belief that Western powers would come to their aid, militarily, in case of a confrontation with Russia. Legal experts now, apparently, are going through these agreements to see exactly what the options and commitments are.

        1. George2g says:

Thanks, I thought the agreements were more recent. However it appears that the experts may be looking for a loophole that would mitigate the necessity of providing assistance to the Ukraine. I wonder if this “invasion” was planned some time ago and and didn’t occur until now as Obama “had more flexibility after the election”. Now the elections are over and the Olympics are only a memory. Seems like a good time to send out the exclusionary forces .

          1. I Seigel says:

I don’t think the uprising in Kiev had anything to do with the timing of the American political cycle. No conspiracy, sorry – altho I’m sure there are those that can find one anywhere.

          2. George2g says:

Actually I share your sentiment. That being said, just because your paranoid doesn’t mean their not out to get you. I think I’m just old enough and cynical enough to look for some grains of truth wherever I might find them. I also am old enough and smart enough to know that this country is not now, what was envisioned so long ago. I don’t find the changes to be positive. In fact the changes being made will ultimately turn this nation into part of the glorious new world order as envisioned by so many of those that we have elected to lead us. I’m also old enough to know that it matters little to me what occurs in and to this nation as I have somewhat limited time to fret. However I do have concerns about how it will affect my grand children and beyond. No longer do I see a land of opportunity.

          3. I Seigel says:

I, too, share some of your concerns. But mine go back to what Eisenhower referred to as the Military-Industrial Complex. Not a conspiracy – it’s in plain sight, sanctioned by the laws of the land. And now, to add to that, the changes to our system that are being allowed by the “Citizens United” ruling of the Supreme Court. We are now being manipulated by those with the loudest voices, which means those with the most money. Scary. And not what was envisioned so long ago.
