Ricardo Rossello Nevares last month asked federal taxpayers to shell out $94 billion to pay for the territory’s recovery from Hurricane Maria — then turned around and paid out about $100 million in Christmasbonuses to island government employees.

The governor’s aides say the bonuses are a longstanding tradition and part of the law, and were planned for in the budget approved last summer.

But that budget came well before Hurricanes Irma and Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, leaving much of the territory in ruin and leaving the government begging for federal assistance.

The island’s financial oversight board, created by Congress as part of a deal to bail the government out of a potential debt default last year, called the payments “imprudent” and said the hurricanes should have forced the governor to rethink his decisions.

Demacrats really LOVE spending MONEY to THEMSELVES….MONEY they do NOT HAVE…CUT off the AID!!!!

  • Dona Mcgilvary says:

Wow! What a con job that was. If it’s their “law” where would the money come from…We need some oversite on this territory!

    1. The Redhawk says:

LET them become a STATE and Let ten SINK………………

  • Big Ed says:

The swamp Trump always talks about is much larger than anyone knew. Imagine having a catastrophe hit, and then the politicians take the money allocated for repairs as a Christmas gift. It’s no wonder the island is totally bankrupt and asking for more money from here constantly. That’s outrageous, but equally outrageous is the fact that we always give it to them. I expect the Democrats will argue for the PR to get the money and then invite them in as a state. More voting Democrats who can’t even keep track of their own money.

  • Jose says:

Time to just let this swamp (PR) just get swept under by their own doings. I do not want my taxes going to finance “bonuses” for the few when our our “ACTUAL CITIZENS” are homeless, veterans do not get appropriate care and our seniior citizens live in poverty

  • Worried Vet says:

Ive been saying for years about this crap. This proves my point people, the elites will make sure they get theirs no matter what. The people on the island are without the basic needs and they spend 100 million. Watch out who you vote for and research your choice, then think about it and repeat. As long as these elites that don’t understands a budget and thinks the word bankruptcy isn’t a real world places like this island wont get better. Places like NYC and most the east and west coast will only get worse. Many of these states are so far in debt they may never recover. Some of these cities are billions in debt with unfunded debt. I pray millions of those retired and going to retire from a government job get paid. Your elected officials didn’t think about the future, they only cared about spending money to get votes. Good luck and pray for the folks that dont work for the government, they need our prayers because they have greedy idiots in charge.

  • I SAY STOP ALL FUNDING TO THEM, THEY DO NOT PAY USA TAXES AND IS NOTHING BUT A WELFARE STATE AND IF THEY WERE AS BAD OFF AS THEY SAY, THEN THEY CANNOT PAY OUT 100 MILLION OF TAX PAYERS MONEY. WE DO NOT OWE THEM ANYTHING.

  • Navy Bob says:

First the government pulled the contract of a company that was working to restore power to the island, stating they were too small to get the job done (but in reality it was because they were too close to a member of the Trump Administration) Then the company that replaced them dropped the ball and the restoration project took 2 to 3 steps backwards. Now they are giving bonuses to employees while others suffer because the government has not the money to get the job done. Is there ANY wonder why this place was bankrupt BEFORE the hurricanes struck? Another example of how Democrats take care of each other and screw the people, then blame the Republicans for being “unfeeling” and “uncaring”. How would the media respond to the excuse that these bonuses were “in the budget” if this had been a Republican state administration?

  • Votedemout says:

Bethony, they want to be a state, but that requires agreement of the other states and who in their right mind would allow that. Oh, that’s right the states controlled by Dim-O-Rats, as they see a permanent gain of two reliable Dim-O-Rat Senators and a few Dim-O-Rat representatives.

  • jngtelco says:

How could he do that if his territory is in bankruptcy. How could congress let him do it?

  • Bethony Sproles says:

If it is true Puerto Rico does not pay any taxes to the U.S. and does not want to become a legitimate state then they should be cut off period. They want their cake and eat it to. The
U.S. is struggling in spite of what they say and Puerto Rico has chosen to do things the wrong way and they should pay the consequences.
