Shifting blame, White House faults war general’s 2014 ISIS assessment as he departs

Army Gen. Lloyd Austin relinquished command in Tampa, Fla., on Wednesday of the U.S. forces fighting the Islamic State –– as a bit of a sour note hung in the air back in Washington.

President Obama has been consistently criticized for a 2014 comment to the New Yorker magazine that the Islamic State, as it invaded Iraq from Syria, was merely the “jayvee.” In other words, it was not to be taken seriously. Months later, the terror army controlled large swaths of Iraq and Syria, forcing Mr. Obama to ordered a new war.

Then, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg interviewed Mr. Obama and came out with a long favorable story this month on the commander in chief’s foreign policy views. In the story is this:

“Early in 2014, Obama’s intelligence advisers told him that ISIS was of marginal importance. According to administration officials, General Lloyd Austin, then the commander of Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, told the White House that the Islamic State was ‘a flash in the pan.’ This analysis led Obama, in an interview with The New Yorker, to describe the constellation of jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria as terrorism’s ‘jayvee team.’”

  • When you are the “smartest guy in the room”, any failure must be with the implementation of the policy and NOT the policy itself. Is this not why Stalin fired (at) all his Generals in 1940? Is this not why Mao and Hitler took out so many Generals in their time?

    Delusional BS!

Absolutely no shame…His top General’s have resigned or have been asked to retire because he has called all the shots…They can’t stand the way this useless POTUS has handled ISIS…He won’t even say Islamic terrorists and has the balls to blame these guy’s…Make me puke Obuma…

    • AKLady

I don’t see you voluntering to pay for it.
Apparently, you want to barrow more money from China to play war games in the Middle East.

You really don’t understand lady…I fought in Vietnam…You can’t run a war with a pen from Washington…If you let troops and there leaders do what they need to do it will be over quickly…Obama sends bombing flites out by the hundreds…That’s a lot of money…When they reach there target he doesn’t let them engage…he is all smoke and mirrors…You really have no clue…

        • AKLady

Bombers bomb, they do not “engage”. Fighters would engage, however, the enemy is not fighting an air war.
Bombis are a lot less expensive than human lives.

          • AKLady – Like most Liberals, it is obvious you have no military experience beyond the movies “M*A*S*H” and “Catch 22”. When an aircraft attacks, either another aircraft or a ground/sea target, it is referred to as “engaging”. Yes, bombers DO engage targets. You know, like Billy Boy Clinton had them do to try to stop from being Impeached. (which he was, despite his efforts)
When President GHW Bush turned the military loose in Desert Storm with out interference from Washington, even you could see the result. However, when hamstrung by meddlers in DC, and their willing accomplices in the far left Media (like most of it) who will do anything in their power to belittle any who wear the uniform, it is a very different story. After the military cut through the Iraqi Army, President GW Bush allowed his good sense to be driven away by non-hackers who never spent a day in uniform. What followed was an incoherent strategy doomed to fail. Neither President Obama nor his “advisors” (read: handlers) have any idea how to conduct a military campaign since they are anit-military.

Let’s see, my parents were both active, career military.

My three husbands were military (two are buried in Arlington, they were KIA in Nam).

I graduated with an MD from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

            I served in Vietnam.

The Iraq Treaty was signed by Bush and made into law by Congress. That treaty required all U.S. Combat troops to be removed from Iraq.

Suggest you educate yourself better concerning fact.

Like so many so-called conservatives, you don’t know jack about facts, and even less about law.

      • I no more wish to “barrow money from China” to pay for a war than I do to pay for feel good, not ever going to work, social programs that are designed to make a permanent dependent class to vote, en-block, for those who give them the most free stuff. We would not have to “barrow” money if people were not collecting tax refunds greater than what they paid in. We would not have to “barrow” money if we did not look at free smart phones, data plans, Wi-Fi, and cable TV as a “right” for a selected class. I pay my taxes, just wrote the check yesterday. Do you? Or are you part of the 50% who pay nothing and get everything? I can bet you are not part of the 10% who pay more that 80% of the Income taxes.

The Lifeline telephone sevice is paid for by telephone service subscribers, not your income tax dollar. It is not a government “welfare” program.

Lifeline came into existence under Reagan so that homeless veterans and the poor could summon emergency services.

Just one example of your self-imposed ignorance

        • AKLady

The lie of “permaent dependent” class went out with the Clinton administration. Federal welfare programs have a five-year, life-time limit. The only exceptions are age and disability.

Oh, and bigoted one, the poor actually spend more of their income than the rich do. Cut out welfare, and watch company, after company go out of business.

Also, had you botheted to educate yourself a bit further you would know that SNAP is a Dept. of Agriculture program. While it feeds the poor, it also keeps American farmers in business.

Exactly what is to be expected from this narcissistic, sociopathic, homosexual, traitor to our country. Too bad someone’s mother didn’t visit a Planned Parenthood clinic for one of those “women’s health care services” they are so good at providing” back in 1963.

    • AKLady

Yes, it is too bad your mother didn’t abort you.
This country could have done without another ignorant, smart mouth.
The health care services provided in 1963 were birth control pills.
They also treated idiots like you for VD. Gave you free condoms and told you to use them.
