WASHINGTON — The personal e-mail account of a State Department whistleblower was hacked, and four years worth of messages — some detailing alleged wrongdoing at the agency — were deleted, The Post has learned.

The computer attack targeted the Gmail account of Diplomatic Security Service criminal investigator Richard Higbie, his lawyer, Cary Schulman, confirmed.

“They took all of his e-mails and then they deleted them all,” said Schulman. He said that he could not prove who was responsible for the hack job, but said the attack was “sophisticated” and called the targeting of Higbie “alarming.”

“Obviously, somebody is not happy with something he’s doing and wanted to get that information and also cause him an inability in the future to have ready access to that,” Schulman said.

Why would anyone keep important information only in email files that are kept somewhere other than his own computer? If it is critical, make a copy and keep it backed up in at least two places at your own home.

they deleted the emails off the Patriot Act computers as well?? the Patriot act requires by law that ALL ISP’S AND EMAIL PROVIDERS have a separate computer system setup for ALL emails coming through their pipes for 7 years…
so I guess they got those emails also

That is why I back up all my important stuff so if anything happens, whether a hack on accident or an act of nature or even if big brother does something to it. I back up my important stuff and get it back. Anything less would be foolish, especially in this case, regardless of the cause.

No big deal. The same thing happened to me a year ago to my yahoo email, and I am just a no body. In addition to all of my email postings they deleted my address book as well, which was a bigger problem for me.
