Germany seeking ‘safe zones’ in Syria to shelter refugees

2016-04-23_23-18-32Germany is seeking the creation of “safe zones” to shelter refugees in Syria, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday, an idea Turkey has long championed in the face of U.N. caution.

Keeping refugees on the Syrian side of the border would help Brussels and Ankara, which hosts 2.7 million Syrian refugees, stem the flow of migrants to European shores. The U.N. has warned against the plan unless there was a way to guarantee the refugees’ safety in the war-torn state. Aid workers have opposed it.

The cessation of hostilities in Syria which began at the end of February and was sponsored by Russia and the United States to allow for peace talks, has since faltered. The opposition, which walked out of negotiations in Geneva said the truce, which excluded powerful jihadist groups such as Islamic State and the Nusra Front, al Qaeda’s branch in Syria, was no longer in place.

t a news conference in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, Merkel called for “zones where the ceasefire is particularly enforced and where a significant level of security can be guaranteed.”

As tens of thousands of refugees fleeing the fighting in Syria are unable to cross into Turkey, and instead are camped near the Azaz border crossing where local agencies offer humanitarian support, some have accused Turkey of stealthily forming such a zone.

REFUGEE CAMPS I AGREE AND AMERICA SHOULD GET IN ON IT AND BUILD CAMPS ALSO IN SYRIA AND DON’T LET THEM IN THE USA AT ALL AND THE ONES THAT HAVE GOT IN BECAUSE OF OBAMA BRING THEM HERE SHOULD BE DEPORTED BACK TO A REFUGEE CAMP.

Germany already has several ghettos where it’s only safe for Muslims and now she wants to create more. She just can’t destroy her country fast enough.

  • Edgardo L. Perez-De Leon

There is no need to displace these Syrians. You do not protect elephants in the zoo but in the wilderness where they belong.

Refugees can be placed safely at the Jordan border of Syria, at the Turkmen area by Latakia or in the Syrian Kurdistan. They are Syrian and Assad have no problem with them. The problem is with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, who want to use them to destabilize Europe. If Merkel is unable to see this is because she is a puppet of London (just like Hitler) or because she is inept.

Obama’s doing the same thing here, there’s another 10,000 on the way, and right now we’re a ticking time bomb! Merkel is trying to cover her butt from letting in to many to start with! She’s had to double her security from all the death threats!

  • Patrick Driscoll

Keeping these people in safe zones in Syria, was always the right move. Left loons using this crisis to feed another agenda.
