Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday ordered 755 U.S. diplomatic staff members to leave Russia.
According to AFP, Putin ordered the diplomatic staff to leave Russia Sunday and added there would be no improvement in relations between the U.S. and Russia soon.
It’s unclear exactly who is covered by Putin’s order. Reuters reported about 1,100 people are employed by the U.S. in Russia but that includes American and Russian citizens. It’s possible that the number announced by the Russian government includes diplomats and their families.
The move appears to make good on a promise Moscow made on Friday threatening to cut hundreds of diplomatic staff in response to the new sanctions legislation.
