Robert R. Simmons, the former 2nd District congressman who in May was defeated by Linda McMahon in their battle for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, acknowledged Monday that he’s thinking about a potential rematch in 2012.

But the Stonington politician added that he wouldn’t make a bid for the seat now held by U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman — a longtime Democrat last re-elected as an independent candidate with big Republican support — if Republican Party leaders in Connecticut and Washington continue to favor wealthy “self-funders” like McMahon.

The co-owner and former chief executive officer of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. spent about $20 million to best Simmons and a third candidate, Weston broker-dealer Peter Schiff. She spent nearly $30 million more before losing the general election to Democrat Richard Blumenthal, who excoriated McMahon with much of the same criticism leveled against her by Simmons.
