Controversial former coal titan in bid to clear name, win Senate seat in West Virginia

Don Blankenship said the Environmental Protection Agency has become “the biggest polluter in the world” by forcing U.S. jobs to carbon-spewing countries like China.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg for this colorful, wildly controversial Senate hopeful who’s using his West Virginia campaign as a vehicle to clear his name and push the theory that an Obama-led anti-coal conspiracy sent him to federal prison.

The former CEO of Massey Energy, Mr. Blankenship spent a year behind bars after being convicted of conspiracy to violate safety standards in connection to the Upper Big Branch mine explosion in 2010 that killed 29 of his employees. Now he faces a seemingly uphill political battle.

He’s facing off against Rep. Evan Jenkins and West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey in the state’s GOP Senate primary, with the winner moving on to a tough general-election brawl with the nation’s reddest Democrat, Sen. Joe Manchin.

The Republicans don’t need anymore characters running for office, they need smart articulate people who will put country first and get their job done. The super partisan group in Washington need to go and be replaced by people who work well with others and remember they represent the all the people even those that didn’t vote for them.

    1. McFerguson says:

Sorry, bobnstuff, we don’t need any more pansy-assed progressives telling us how government is going to take care of us. We need honest, strong Constitutional conservatives who believe in limited government, individual freedom, free market capitalism and traditional values. We’re an independent, self-reliant, hard-working people who can take care of ourselves. The Environmental Protection Agency was precisely the type of Agency liberals like Obama usde to control the people and flaunt its power over them. Wake up!

As I say we need rid of all these fake conservative who talk a good game but when it comes time to vote they vote the party line every time. Our government was set up on the idea that the elected officials represent all the people, even those that didn’t vote for them. As far as Free Market Capitalism, these so call conservatives don’t support it any more the the far left wing. They support big business. You seem to have a few facts wrong, the EPA was put in place by Nixon not some left wing Democrat. Most of the programs you are complaining about are in fact Republican in origin, even the ACA was based on a bunch of republican ideas and stolen by the Democrats. Open your eyes instead of going with the party line. Your freedoms have been taken away in most cases by Republicans like the Patriot Act the biggest grab of our freedoms in history. Our government should be helping people be independent but instead they are helping those that buy them their offices. Now the last thing we need is some big businessman who went to jail for safety violation and has a record of being self serving over caring about his workers. This man is a joke at best and a lying thief in fact.

“You seem to have a few facts wrong, the EPA was put in place by Nixon not some left wing Democrat.” And your reading comprehension skills remain as good as ever. McFergusion said “The Environmental Protection Agency was precisely the type of Agency liberals like Obama used (his typo) to control the people and flaunt its power over them.” He NEVER said the democrats started the EPA. You, and the rest of your liberal colleagues, need to take remedial reading, and listening. Like so many other times, you are confusing what you read through your very own prism to what was written.

“Our government was set up on the idea that the elected officials represent all the people, even those that didn’t vote for them. ” Try telling this to the Democrats in the “resist” movement in Congress.

I’m against any party excluding the thinking of the other. Right now you have the party that has spent so much time saying know that they haven’t a clue who to pass bills. We just had a major tax bill that even most of the republicans had no say in. This isn’t how our country was meant to be run. You complain that there are to many regulations on business but every single one of the had more public hearing time then the tax give a way just passed. Every regulation takes a long time to get through and is in response to a problem. The EPA’s job is to keep you safe from being poisoned by greedy companies like power plants and coal mines. I’m old enough to remember just what things were like before the EPA. The industries being regulated even get to give their point of view before the regulations are passed and in some cases even are involved in the writing of the regulations. Can you say the same for how republicans are trying to pass bills? The EPA was passed under a republican and the republicans have been in power for 25 of the years it’s been in place.

My point however was that the republicans don’t need any more clowns for their circus, they need smart man of good will running for office. Blankenship is not one of those and if you look at his history only a fool or a democrat would want him on the republican ticket.

          2. Navy Bob says:

Stuff – No response about your reading comprehension, huh?

“I’m against any party excluding the thinking of the other.” Yet you seemed to have no problem with the previous administration bragging about not working with the GOP. How about the comment “I have a cell phone and a pen” to get things done? Doesn’t sound like working together there.

“My point however was that the republicans don’t need any more clowns for their circus, they need smart man of good will running for office.” Yep, the Democrats do this with life time seats for the likes of Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd. Yea, keep the drunken killers and stone racists in power. They can work side by side with fossils like Conyers, Jackson-Lee, Mosley-Braun and Rangel to get both side of racism all in one party. And “good will” out of Schumer, Pelosi and Hoyer? When pigs fly.
