NYT executive editor: ‘We don’t get the role of religion in people’s lives’

The New York Times’ executive editor said that his newspaper — and “media powerhouses” across the nation — “do not understand what motivates devoutly religious Americans.”

Dean Baquet sat down Thursday with NPR for an extended interview on the media landscape following Donald Trump’s presidential election win on Nov. 8. Host Terry Gross essentially engaged in an after-action review in terms of what media outlets can learn from the election cycle.

When Mr. Baquet was asked whether he is “wrestling” with how to cover President-elect Trump, he used the question to pivot to ways to reach religious readers.

“I want to make sure that we are much more creative about beats out in the country so that we understand that anger and disconnectedness that people feel,” Mr. Baquet said. “And I think I use religion as an example because I was raised Catholic in New Orleans. I think that the New York-based and Washington-based too probably, media powerhouses don’t quite get religion. We have a fabulous religion writer, but she’s all alone. We don’t get religion. We don’t get the role of religion in people’s lives. And I think we can do much, much better. And I think there are things that we can be more creative about to understand the country.”

Mr. Baquet’s comments dovetailed with sentiments shared earlier in the week by Fox News star Megyn Kelly, who told Ms. Gross Wednesday that America was in a “dangerous” place because too many citizens do not trust the media.

I disagree that those who don’t get it, never will. I am not a fan of organized religions because there is so much man made manipulation in every one of them, but their basis is for people to seek to understand and live by the intent of the creator of the Universe, that which we call God. Many who do not understand come to understand; I am one of them.

You don’t have to understand it you just need to keep your nose out of it. Freedom of Religion still in the Constitution last I read. You all must understand something about it because you have such a fear of it and because all the Left tries so hard to destroy it, take it out of our lives.

No you don’t understand and you never will and as to atheists they to need to get their noses out of religion. Nobody is forcing religion on anyone, people choose it, so why all the hubbub and the huge billboards trying to keep people out of church on Christmas? What is all this crap about not being able to say Merry Christmas when did that decapitate anyone?

No you don’t understand it so let it be, leave us alone, go about your lives we don’t keep badgering us, when you are fixing to go to the other side you will understand well enough. I am an RN for nigh on 30 years, worked Hospice and with lots of death during war etc. Believe me you gonna get a Crash Course in Religion when the time comes.

Mr. Baquet, like most of the journalists at the N.Y. Times, is a fool. And like most N.Y. Times journalists, he’s a half-a-commie loon who believes government IS God, and all the little people should just trust Government to take care of them and provide their every need. They’re also “progressives” politically, which means they believe the Constitution is a relic, no longer needed by the sophisticates in today’s modern world, you know, like those at the Times. Their God, Barack Obama, decries the Bill of Rights which he considers to be “negative rights” because they’re too much about what the government can’t do TO you, and not enough about what the government must do FOR you. Old Barry Soetero doesn’t believe a law abiding Joe Citizen should have the right to own a gun for his own self protection. Only the government should own guns, of course. And he declared to a group of people who believed in hard work and the free market economy, “You didn’t build that, somebody else did.” Meaning of course that no individual working hard can accomplish anything without the government’s help and assistance. Mr. Obama and the N.Y Times are tied to the hip philosophically. One is a failed President, the other is a failing newspaper.

THE entire MSM has no use for the “Religious Christians”, Period! They are the leaders of the “Monkey see, Monkey do” side of life! The “only religion they will acclaim is Islam, never giving a thought to, if Islam wins, they will all be “Dead”! They spent the last 8 years calling the “religious folks” names, and it got them “handed their head” so to speak! Now, they send out their best and bravest to tell us that, “well, we underestimated all of you, and now we are looking for ways to get “Even”!

    • Rodney Steward

And all to please a black man, because he was never a President!

      • James in Texas

Sad truth, “He” was the President. A very, very bad President, but he was elected and then re-elected. If he wasn’t the President during that period, who/what are we going to blame for the near destruction of our nation? The good news….We are done with the Slime-ball and we look forward to some “payback”! Congress, we have our eyes on all of you, don’t screw it up!

        • Rodney Steward

Bingo, very well put my friend!!

          • James in Texas

And, if “We” do our part I believe that these next 8 years will be “better” than the Reagan years. And that my friend will be the “best payback I can imagine”! Liberalism is a terrible disease, look how well it worked on the Democrat Party!

          • Rodney Steward

The Dem. party has turned plum evil, it’s really the communist party, but with them anything goes, no matter how immoral it may be!!

          • James in Texas

Yeah, and they “Cry really good”! All except Ms. Stool Sample!

          • Rodney Steward

HA, HA, OHHH that’s good!! LOL….

They don’t get it, and never will. People “outside the beltway” and other “major markets” just do not understand people who do not think like them. That is the primary reason Hillary lost. This was why we saw a rise of the Tea Party and people gravitating to candidates who are not considered “mainstream”. This is what gave rise to alternate media outlets, like talk radio, and news teams like Fox and One American News. It is not racism, sexism or any other “ism” as they would have you believe. It is not anger but more a disappointment with NOT being equally represented or heard. It is the medias absolute reliance on being told what to say and how to say it by one party, and their absolute acceptance of this role, that is why people do not trust the media any longer. It is the arrogance of politicians like Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and, yes, Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton that take the votes of people for granted that fuels these movements and contributes to the political demise. It happened to the GOP in 2006, and will probably happen again unless they heed the warning and listen to the “people” and NOT what the media tells them the “people” are thinking. They need to quit worrying about being invited to parties and to be guests on TV and start worrying about keeping their word to the voters.

    • McFerguson

Excellent comments, Bob. I agree completely…

They fear Christianity and that is why they want it destroyed. What they don’t understand is burn all our Bibles, take out every church etc it has been tried before and yet because they don’t understand, they never will take it from us. Our religion is in our hearts and minds and we keep it there where the only way you can stop religion is to kill us. I firmly believe given the chance they would. In a New York minute.

      • Bob

You can burn a bible or an American flag under the guise of “Freedom of Speech” anytime you wish. You can NOT burn a Koran, or you are labeled and “Islamaphobe”. You can NOT desecrate the flag of any one else or become a “Xenaphobe”. Sometimes I just wish people would read the ENTIRE first line of the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

        • Tiger

Gotcha and we are topsey turvey but Trump will Right us and we can get back to the road that leads to Prosperity, Sanity and we can take out the flies in the ointment. After all they are just maggots from the start.
