Texas landowners fear orders to make room for wall

la-na-texas-border-wall-20170407For 2½ centuries, Cecilia Benavides’ family has owned land tangled with honey mesquite trees and towering clumps of cactus on a sweeping bend of the Rio Grande.

Generations of family have gathered by the water’s edge to swim, fish for catfish and alligator gar and hold Easter jamborees.

But this land is considered prime territory for something more than swimming and fishing: For years, the federal government has pondered a way to build a stronger barrier across it to halt illegal immigration from Mexico.

In February, federal authorities made the long-looming threat concrete. A letter from the U.S. attorney in southern Texas informed the Benavides family that the government intends to seize a 60-foot-wide strip of the property to build new sections of a border wall.

The federal government can use eminent domain laws to take the land they need. They are required to pay a fair price for what they take. That process plays out countless times every year as a government unit takes land they need for roads or government buildings. Although I feel for people who are going to lose scenic views into Mexico, we need to secure our borders. If virtual borders can work that’s fine, but in the end the security of our nation is more important than a scenic view into Mexico.

As far as the concerns of the residents, if our nation can put people on the moon we should be able to engineer walls which will allow people to get water from the Rio Grande and deal with the other issues raised in the story.

Do they think it is safe to swim in that River these days ? I sure as hell wouldn’t. Alligator Gar Terrorists & Drug Runners ??

In my opinion, to be fair, 1/2 the wall needs to be built on the Mexican side of the boarder/river. Even at the cost of (eminent) military domain/possession on Mexico’s side of the border.

  • Janis says:

Solution: You don’t want the Government to build a wall on the back side of your property? Fine, do a slight detour and build the wall on both sides and the front. Now those homeowners will virtually be “citizens” of Mexico. Enjoy the view, folks.

I feel some compassion for them but they will have to “get over it”…border security over rules in importance these days. Over the years in my NE Coast state there has been few of my family and friends that had their property purchased (well below value) by state government to expand airports and build hwys. Times change and they had no choice but to move on w/ their memories….I have the memory of a beautiful wild life refugee w/ trails they ran a hwy through-sad even disgusted but got over it.

I got a letter from my congressman today explaining what many members of the house see as the solution.

“There remain many challenges to securing
our border, including the need for more technology and personnel, and in
some places physical barriers such as fences or walls. Where a
physical barrier is impractical, sufficient assets will need to be
deployed to ensure we reach the maximum attainable security along the
border, and I look forward to working with my colleagues and the
Administration to get the job done.”
    Representative Keith Rothfus

It seems he and a group from the house visited our borders and talked to the people who’s job it is to secure our borders to find out what their thinking was. Maybe we should listen to the experts instead of just building the Great Wall of Trump.

  • American Me says:

I understand the concerns of the land owners and I’m sure most can be worked out.We need security and a high wall or fence will get the job done. Some areas are not fit for a wall. The people are tired of Illegals crossing their land and leaving tons of trash behind. So they either want to stop Illegal immigration or they don’t.The Fences we have now don’t work, but a 30 foot fence with RAZOR wire like they surround prisons with will work and with sensors to alert Border Patrol so they can respond they will work even better. We also need border stations every few miles so Border patrol can quickly respond. But like most things these days everyone is not on the same page and some will try to stop the barrier no matter what it turns out to be.

They don’t build 30 foot walls with razor wire around prison anymore. In fact most prisons never did have them. Even our Super Max prisons walls aren’t that high.
