Ted Cruz, battling for second place in South Carolina, barnstormed the state Friday with the “duck commander,” a Bible-thumping, gun toting reality TV star Cruz envisions as a diplomat.
“Imagine Phil Robertson as the ambassador to the United Nations,” Cruz told a raucous crowd of several hundred backers at an airplane hangar in West Columbia, “How much would you pay to see that? Can you just imagine sitting in the UN general assembly, the Russian ambassador says something, he leans over and says `Well that doesn’t make any sense at all!’ ”
Evangelical Christians account for nearly two-thirds of the GOP electorate in South Carolina, and Roberts, patriarch of the “Duck Dynasty” family, is popular with religious conservatives. As a bonus, he’s also a vocal gun rights advocate – overlapping blocs that are critical to Cruz’s chances of staying ahead of Marco Rubio.
Donald Trump is a prohibitive favorite in South Carolina.
