GOP convention no-shows threaten to undercut Trump unity push

by Adam Shaw  |  published on May 31, 2016

Even as Donald Trump and Republican Party bosses diligently work Capitol Hill in hopes of bringing the party together after a fractious presidential primary, convention planners could still be looking at a block of empty seats for the July convention.

A growing roster of senior GOP figures – from governors to senators to, most notably, nearly every living GOP presidential nominee – is vowing to skip the convention in Cleveland, despite the candidate starting to win over the rank-and-file.

In an unconventional election season where Trump has capitalized on an anti-establishment fervor, the case can be made that Trump does not need the blessing of party elders, or their attendance.

“Trump is a master entertainer and more than likely going to put together a convention program that attempts to highlight his strengths and sideline some of the major absences,” Republican strategist Ron Bonjean told FoxNews.com.

  • RadioFreeKansas

Ahh….the ultimate (un) “reality” show and its host. This ought to be some circus! Let’s see, who should the republicans put up next time? Jeff Probst from Survivor? Phil Kogan from The Amazing Race? Oh, I know..Mose from Amish In The City!!

  • onefour

It’s not only those in Congress it’s also past presidents, past candidates etc that will not stand behind Trump and the American people that have selected him as their candidate for president

  • Miguel Angelo Flores

VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS OUT OF WASHINGTON, THEY ARE A DEN OF THIEVES CORRUPTED TO THE CORE. WE NEED NEW, I REPEAT, NEW BLOOD. KICK THEM OUT AND INSTITUTE A MAXIMUM OF TWO TERMS. WHAT HAPPEN WE “PUBLIC SERVANTS”? . THEY ALL PIMPS.I SPIT ON THEM!.

  • Miguel Angelo Flores

THE GOP WASHINGTON ESTABLISHMENT WILL RATHER HAVE KILLARY TAKE “HER” CROWN AND KEEP SUCKING THE GOVERNMENT TITS AS THEY ARE ACCUSTOMED ON DOING. SHAME ON YOU. GO GET AN HONEST JOB ASSHOLES. I’M OUT OF YOUR PARTY. AFTER 60 YEARS BEEN A REPUBLICAN; YOU AND THE DEMOCRATS ARE A DISGRACE FOR THIS COUNTRY YOU HAVE BEEN TOO LONG IN LA-LA LAND, AND ARE CORRUPTED TO THE CORE. MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU, I NEVER WILL

  • Deb

The only Republicans/Conservatives that won’t be there are the ones afraid when Trump becomes President he will find out how crooked these people are and call them out on it. They are Afraid.

  • Robert Wilson

Talk about FRACTURED, the only thing fractured about the Republicans is their HEADS. THE PEOPLE WILL RULE.

  • What a bunch of whining little bitches. They’re in for a rude awakening. The Gravy Train Stops here and the Trump Train is full speed ahead!

  • Mike N

If Trump were not to be the nominee he would not work for unity. Instead he would probably run as a third party candidate. I can’t believe how many people he has fooled–even people I respect.

    • If rainbows and unicorns flew out of your ass, Ted Cruz’s ministry would be in the white house. Sorry. Not the will of the people.

      • Mike N

Trump is a con artist in which you and many others have been duped. Already he has backed down on being self-funding. Now he is saying constructing the wall was just a suggestion. He says everything is negotiable. Listen to him with an open mind and you may change your opinion of him. I have no clue what he will be like as President. He is like a cult leader. People will follow him no matter what he says.
        http://home.wavecable.com/~mtnavarre/page12.html
Because of Judges I was planning to vote for him, but if there is a good third party candidate I may go that route. He may be worse than Hillary. I just don’t know.

  • kathleen_smith121

Asks us if we care. NO WE DO NOT.

  • The Redhawk

WELL aren’t some of these non attendees the same who helped ELECT ODUMBO TWICE????
Mc Cain.. Mitt…BLEW the ELECTIONS .. so???? who needs the same LOSERS ???

  • justinwachin

Some of the party “elders” will appear at the convention in an attempt to show how everyone is joining the Trump bandwagon. That isn’t a bad strategy. Some past Republican presidential nominees will choose to stay home. That’s okay.

George HW Bush’s “100 hour war” left a lot of problems unresolved which we are still dealing with; he also left the presidency with the nation in a recession. Bob Dole was unable to beat a sexual harrasser and known liar. George W Bush got us into two wars which we still haven’t been able to end successfully; he left office shortly after an economic collapse. John McCain’s presidential campaign was pretty much dead until he brought Sarah Palin on board; when the economic collapse hit he had very few answers or ideas. Mitt Romney ran against a corrupt and incompetent incumbent; although his campaign was gaining ground near the end it appeared to run out of steam and he disappeared.

If Donald Trump wants to begin a new era for the Republican party the empty seats may be a welcome gift. While I am not a Trumpite, I have enough sense to know that charting a winning course usually begins by abandoning past failures.

Where were all of you Trump haters when the phony pretender Obama(not his real name) took over America and has almost completely destroyed it as he welcomes his ISIS brothers in secretly while pretending they are poor immigrants and he is good hearted human being. Well that is all a lie and he is building his army against us. They people coming in are from 75, yes 75 different countries and they are coming to take us on. STUPID, STUPID OBAMA SUPPORTERS helping to corrupt the voting in America as they 23 training sites train ISIS right under our noses. That’s why we need sanctuary cities to protect and keep the secrets of Valerie Jarrett and Barack Hussian Obama!

  • rightsright

Are they all Bilderbergers who secretly want Hillary in the White House so they can continue to get more perks and get rich because we have a corrupt government? Finally we have a voice in Trump and they are too stupid to realize that we went unheard for so many years and they all did as they damn well pleased as we screamed to be heard. Paul Ryan sent me a survey and at the end of course asked for money. NO MONEY TO THE CORRUPT RNC! My donations will go to Trump because when the chips are down he LOVES AMERICA and will consult with the best and will TRY HIS BEST TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN despite you Communists traitors! By the way, I will complete the survey, however, and add a few of my own statements to the controlled survey.

  • CrustyOldGeezer

Well, BOTH ‘bushes’ that made it to the White House have been BLATANTLY ANTI-CONSERVATIVE, the loser that couldn’t win his own State is just like them.

McKainnedy was shot down over Vietnam because he WAS NOT following combat protocol, but was in the equivalent of “Here, hold me beer” when he was shot down.

That was the LAST of 5(?) Navy Jets that he managed to total while in the US Navy.

Daddy was a well respected Admiral, and protected from reality to protect Daddies reputation.

Sort of the military version of “the bosses kid gets everything he wants, but don’t mention it or you will be fired.”

When offered to be released by the NV, daddy told him to stay, otherwise he will never go anywhere in the world, political or otherwise.

Who cares if mittens shows up?

  • Iamacitizen2

Yup they are all ONE unit under O. But with his pen and paper he has
set them all aside including 350 million citizens. Easy sleezy!!!

Now the RNC is considering changing the rules to prohibit each State’s and
Territories bound delegates to unbound delegates and they will instill
crusty cruz “a man without a country” an illegal immigrant who along
with his wife worked for Bush to help design the borderless North
    American Union.

Remember a couple of weeks ago Washington State
delegates voted three (3) days PRIOR to the Primary that 41 out of 44
delegates went to Cruz??? When the primary was over ALL 44 delegates
went to Trump by the State of Washington because he WON every
District??? Well there’s a PRIME example of and in your FACE example of
what has been going on BEHIND THE SCENE’S all across Amerika by the RNC and Crusty Cruz…one can only presume anyway. It was so obvious even though Crusty Cruz suspended his run.

I am pretty sure that this is why Ryan will NOT endorse Trump because he knows what’s coming and it won’t be pretty for ANY Trump train voter. I am very upset about the following article and EVERYONE SHOULD GO READ IT…this is a BILLBOARD and in your face article that will explain my blog:

    http://beforeitsnews.com/polit

This article appeared first on RedState’s site and mentions about unbinding
ALL first round delegates and giving them to Crusty Cruz..

    VERY UPSETTING FOR SURE.

  • Ken says

The Establishment is in a life and death fight to maintain CONTROL. At this point they don’t care if all the Liberal RINOs are brought out of the closet. If they lose this Election and Hillary is not elected President decades of work crafting the destruction of the USA will be lost. It would have been such a “nice” election if the “sheepie” would have just supported one of the Establishment selected candidates and run them against Hillary then it would have been a win/win for the Establishment – as long as they select the candidates for both Parties it doesn’t matter which one wins because they still control the Professional Politician Puppets

  • Steve Dolyniuk

All of these Anti-Trump Republicans are nothing but TRAITORS. So corrupt, they will do everything they can to keep their Gravy Train going. They are just as Amoral as the Democrats, who will do anything to stay in power.

  • Delia Holloway

I would be glad to take any delegates place at the convention. I would love to hear our leader speak. If a delegate doesn’t want to vote the way his/her voters voted then they should be impeached anyway.

  • Rodney Steward

There is no more REP and DEM., it is now the system, the 2 parties now is the System and the People, and we are now divided thanks to Obama! The system is setting up a win for Hellary, she guarantees Big Government, and that’s what the system wants! BIG GOV. = BIG MONEY = POWER!!!!!!!!

There has not been two parties for quite some time, All these corrupt people do is give lip service & pretend to fight one another, but agree before hand on everything. There is only ONE Party in DC. The Party of LIARS !!

  • SDofAZ

Boo hoo, the establishment candidates are so unhappy. Sit it out then you idiots! This is what happened in 2012. But trust in one thing, the rest of us want no part of the NWO order if it is delivered by Hillary and BO or these GOP RINO establishment asswipes!

    • 3CatLady

I’m with you, SDofAZ. Trump may be the right person for this time even though I don’t agree with everything he says just as Reagan was for his time. After the apologetic, weak, anti-American current prez who threatens to cancel elections and his wife, it’s time someone stood up for Americans and America. If you want Hildabeast in the WH with her pervert husband, sit elections out or vote for a third party. I’m so sick of the political games and the anti-Trump group vitriol by RINOs, Demorats, Republican establishment, and libertard media. I’ll vote for Trump and hope America will wake up and vote for him too.

  • Gregg Jensen

No Booshes? No Romney? The Hell with them. Donald Trump won the primaries without them, and in most cases, he won with their active opposition against him.

    Step off, Cream Puffs.

  • kathy diamond

THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. THEY CALL THEMSELVES REPUBLICANS, WHAT A jOKE. They talk about conduct? They should try practicing what they preach. Their actions against not only Trump, but the People of the United States is unaccteptable and they should actually be thrown out of the Republican Party. If these are our Law Makers, people who we depend upon to Vote for OUR Best Interest, it is clear we cannot trust them to do whats right. THROW THEM THE HELL OUT

    • Barrustio

Most of these people consider themselves CONSERVATIVES before they consider themselves part of a party. Trump is anything but conservative and they don’t have to be ashamed of not compromising their values for the sake of a party. This has everything to do with the American people not just the Trump supporters.

      • Luke

That’s right, the American people want Trump, that’s what counts, these so called Rep’s who don’t want to come together because they think they are so conservative well it seems they’re not, vote for their Rep challenger in the next election..

        • Barrustio

YOU say “the American people want Trump” but you can only speak for yourself, that is the American way. EVERY American has the right to make the choice THEY want. Trying to “shame” someone for being true to their values by deriding their decision vote their conscience, is more in line with the liberal point of view. This is not about party it’s about what’s best for America and YOUR perception of what is best is not shared by all.

          • kathleen_smith121

Sure is shared by me and many I know.

          • Barrustio

Birds of a feather do flock together. That’s the basis of many fraternities, sororities and such…some groups of people think alike…others, quite differently.

          • kathy diamond

Barrustio, Yes, I can only speak for myself, but Many, Many Thousands of Americans also spoke for themselves with their votes. THAT’S AMERICAN

          • Barrustio

Absolutely…it’s the AMERICAN way that gave us Obama…people speaking for themselves.

          • kathy diamond

Barrustio, Yes, but they didn’t just vote Obama in office, they voted for the free stuff, the free obama phone. Not smart people.

          • Barrustio

“Not smart people”…You’re right but that could apply to many situations…that could apply to those who signed up at Trump U…not smart enough to not be conned…and the con could still be on…but as Pelosi said…”we have to vote for it to see what’s in it”.

          • Luke

How do you know the Trump university was a con, another one of your liberal opinions only you can speak to.
Trump will be good for this country and his University has nothing to do with it..
But lets let clinton slide on her e-mails, her treason, Benghazi and all of the lies that liar tells the gullible herd..

          • Barrustio

You don’t know that it wasn’t a con. Consider for a moment the number of students bringing suit against him. Also then consider the fact that lawyers know what can be damning evidence. Then ask yourself why Trump’s lawyers asked that the records be sealed if there was nothing there to hide or could be damaging or indicative of a con. So you are right, I don’t “know”, but I would like to see those records to decide for myself if there is damning evidence.
I certainly don’t want to give Hillary a pass on anything but my priority is that she answer for Benghazi rather than her emails. The fact that she violated protocol is a given, I want accountability for LIVES lost. As to whether Trump would be good for our country, we can only speculate but again if Trump was a con with the University what makes you think he won’t con America the way Obama did?

          • Luke

Well now we know that the clintons are behind these lawsuits against Trump..

Trump is not a con man, the clintons fit that description, Trump has too much at stake as a business man to be a clinton type criminal and liar..

            https://thehornnews.com/clinton-pals-behind-trump-lawsuit/

          • Barrustio

Wow!!! So the Clintons talked all these students and teachers into exposing the scam at Trump U. Well I’ll be, they finally did something right.

          • Luke

What scam, where’s your proof, I haven’t seen anything that confirmed that lie you and the bitch of Benghazi spews, I say you’re just a useful idiot of the libtard party..

          • Barrustio

The useful idiot is you who is falling for the same “Hope and Change” song by a different con man with a different title “Make America Great Again”. I see his students aren’t the only ones who got scammed. I guess you didn’t hear where the teachers there were pressured to get the students to go into debt with credit cards and loans they couldn’t afford for additional classes, eh. That’s what Trump relies on…low information supporters…in his own words “I love the uneducated”.

          • Joellen Wortham

No cheating and gop got us obama

          • Deb

Who is winning, Trump that’s how we know the people want him or do you prefer the American hater that is in now, or the crook who wants to be?

          • Barrustio

Polls show Hillary winning but Trump catching up…so that means the American people as a whole are TORN

          • Luke

You say Trump is anything but conservative, well that’s just your opinion and you don’t speak for everyone..
No one is trying to shame anyone, I’m just trying to convey the truth about liberals..
I do however believe I speak for many who feel as I do about Trump and the direction of the country. We cannot stand another four years of this administration and that’s what clinton represents.

          • Barrustio

The fact that the country cannot take another four years of an “extended” Obama administration is a given… to assume that voting for Trump would take us away from the liberal status quo, is erroneous.

          • Luke

I never assumed voting for Trump would take away from the liberal status quo although I think it would stymie their pathetic agenda for a short time..

          • Barrustio

Trump is not yet president and is already pushing the liberal agenda forward by inviting Kaitlan Jenner to use the ladies room in his hotel. Stymie my foot, he will pander to the LGBT.

          • Luke

For God’s sake man, can you find anything else that is meaningless..

          • Barrustio

Sure, he praises Planned Parenthood who dismembers babies and sells their parts for profit. I know that the death of 1 million babies a year are probably meaningless to you also. Frankly Trump is probably more liberal than even Bernie.

          • Luke

Look, the murder of those children by the evil liberal trash in America is not supported by me and I didn’t like you insinuating I did since I said nothing to make you tell that lie.
Trump never said that either…now come back when you can stop lying..

          • Barrustio

In reference my to post regarding Trump’s liberal move of giving Kaitlan free rein of his restrooms, you retorted…”Can you find something else that is meaningless”. Well, to me bastardizing the norm regarding restrooms according the gender one “wishes” to be, is not meaningless any more than Trump’s support for the killing of babies which is as much part of the liberal agenda as the restroom issue…NOT meaningless…to me.

          • Luke

For God’s sake, you’ve never heard Trump support abortion or perverts while running for office..
Are you OK with obumba and clintoon supporting heinous abortions and the pervert trash.
You probably support that, so get off of Trump, he’s the only one that will bring this country back from liberal retard failure

          • Barrustio

Ever hear of “guilt by association”. Trump has on more than one occasion expressed his unequivocal support for Planned Parenthood. He has said the “the Court has spoken on gay marriage”. That the restroom issue (safety for young girls and women) should be left to the states. He has also said that he is “pro-life, but wouldn’t change the abortion laws”. he is fine with abortion “in certain cases”. I am NOT ok with Obama and Hillary giving us the baby killing and perverted trash, that is exactly why I will wait until Trump states unequivocally where he stands on these issues BEFORE November if I am to vote for him. It’s not that difficult to do but he avoids the questions when they ask him for a direct answer on these issues. If he can’t convince me before NOv. I will write in Cruz, as my conscience will not allow me to vote for the “lesser of two evils”.

          • misterdawg

Barrustio is a liberal troll here to stir things up. He’s a Obuma asshole sucker.

          • misterdawg

So a vote for Crooked-Lying Hillary is your choice?

          • Barrustio

Absolutely not…perhaps write in Cruz or maybe even take a look at Johnson…it’s is obvious that both nominees have an enormous disapproval rating to overcome.

          • misterdawg

Any vote for someone beside of Trump is a vote for Hillary, of course all you anti-Trump people are saying, “I’m tired of voting for the lesser of two evils” Hillary is the EVIL! There is no one else to compare her too.

          • Barrustio

Trump has said the Court has spoken on gay marriage…he said Planned Parenthood does wonderful things for women…he said the abortion laws should not be changed….he allowed Kaitlan to use the women’s bathroom…I don’t see where Hillary would have done any differently. They both sound evil to me. Let’s see what Johnson has to offer.

      • kathy diamond

Barrustio, You said, ” they don’t have to be ashamed of not compromising their values” My question to you is , WHAT VALUES ? just as one example, The Bush’s, they are pissed off at Trump over Jeb, so, they refuse to go to the convention. Thats not about values, thats about personal hard feelings. Throwing their weight around. I don’t respect that, not when they use the word conservative as a reason. This entire election process has raised a lot of eye brows, a lot of questions about the honesty of the system, and instead of these Good Old Boys stepping up & doing the right thing, they continue to do more harm.

        • Barrustio

So you don’t respect the notion that people should be respectful or the notion that they shouldn’t have to be associated with someone who is disrespectful or has disrespected them and their whole family? Would you expect Cruz to show up after Trump accused his father of being complicit in the Kennedy assassination? There’s an old saying about burning bridges. I don’t remember ANY candidate being crass towards any other opponent the way Trump was. Rubio seems to be the only one brown-nosing right now but he’s young and looking for a spot to continue on.

          • kathy diamond

Barrustio, You missed my point. If they are pissed off, FINE, thats their choice & reason But to misuse their power to fight back is wrong.

          • Barrustio

“Misuse their power to fight back”??? That’s exactly what liberals say about Christians when they are unwilling to accept abortion and gay marriage.

      • Robert Wilson

Where can you find a Christian leader that is above reproach? An honest, forthright person that works for no one but the citizens of this country. A president that honors the constitution, and his OUTH OF OFFICE? HUH??? Send him to me, I will help vote him in.

        • Barrustio

Where were you when Cruz was running?

    • The Redhawk

YEP!!v TIME TO FLUSH the DC SEWER of all IDIOTS from BOTH SIDES!!!

      • Robert Wilson

        YOU’LL NEED A VERY LARGE TOILET,(with only 1/2 seat.)

t is not the SIZE of the TERLET… is HOW MANY TURDS can be Flushed at Any Given Time!!! and whether or not they are the nEW Odumbo TERLETS!!!!
          ooooorahhhh111

    • onefour

I agree with you. They are acting like little children that can not get their way so they fold their arms across their chest and pout. We supported them it’s time for them to support us and the people choice in a candidate. Man up people

      • Elaine

These senators need to remember that they are not our leaders, but are our REPRESENTATIVES. They work for US, not the other way around.

    • Robert Wilson

There are too many “sleeper democrats” in the Republican party, and THEY ARE EASILY BOUGHT.

      • kathy diamond

Robert Wilson, I can’t dispute that. This is the reason both sides are fighting Trump. They don’t want to lose their Golden Goose. Sad, isn’t it
