Many Americans Renounce Citizenship, Even Before President Trump

by Robert W. Wood  |  published on May 6, 2016

It seems crazy to call it the ‘New Normal’, but once again, record numbers of Americans are renouncing citizenship. Every three months, the Treasury Department publicly names individuals who renounced. It is surely more about FATCA, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act enacted in 2010, than it is about politics. Still, numbers are flying, with one poll saying that 1 in 4 Americans would consider leaving if Trump is elected. Others claim they will leave if Hillary is elected.

In reality, of course, most who bristle about politics are not serious. And for those who are, they surely mean a temporary move, not a final exit. In contrast, giving up citizenship is a big deal. Yet the number of published expatriates for the first three months of 2016 was a record 1,158. In 2015, there were approximately 4,300 expatriations. Comparing present to past suggests that Americans renouncing citizenship have risen 560% from their Bush administration high. There are now 18 times as many renouncers as in 2008.

Of course, these numbers seem tiny compared to the influx of immigrants. Yet expatriations have historically been much lower, making the uptick worrisome. Moreover, the published list is incomplete, with many not counted. Surprisingly, no one seems to know exactly how big the real number is, even though the IRS and FBI both track Americans who renounce. There is no single explanation, though some renounce because of global tax reporting and FATCA. One law adding to the mix is the IRS power to revoke passports.

The reasons for renouncing can be family, tax and legal complications. Dual citizenship isn’t always possible, as this infographic from MoveHub shows. And leaving can be expensive. Some countries have no fee, but America charges $2,350 to hand in your passport. That is more than twenty times the average of other high-income countries. The U.S. government has collected about $12.6 million in fees since the fall of 2014, after hiking its fee to renounce citizenship by 422%. Some renouncers write why they gave up their U.S. citizenship.

Anyone who is willing to give up their citizenship if Trump wins is very likely a liberal anyway and something like that happening would be just too good to be true. After living through eight years of the dictator in chief his Marie-Antoinette “don’t let em eat cake first bitch and his illiterate minions we can certainly stand a Donald Trump presidency. (Yes I know Marie never said that, but it is recognizable).

Problem is that Libs never follow through with the threat. If this were true, we’d be done with the like of Rosie O’Donnell and Alec Baldwin. That Lena Dunham is making the threat got me to vote FOR Trump. Now if we can just get Jane Fonda to ride shotgun?

I hope Obama and Clinton are proud of themselves. I also hope Trump chooses Cruz as VP and will use Cruz’s idea of abolishing the IRS. Plus, if the FBI fails to do their job providing the overwhelming evidence to prosecute Clinton, may as well abolish FBI too since our laws are ONLY selectively enforced. I pity the younger generations.

What this article doesn’t say that people have been leaving the US at a rate of around ten times higher every year, since Obama took over. People have been leaving because of the high taxes and loss of freedom in the country.

You are welcome Mr. Ockunzzi. But, the REAL Thanks goes to the 58,000 plus brothers who never came home. Please remember them…

I have the perfect solution…let’s deport both HRC and Donald Duck and start with the elections again. Let’s just hope we can find a better candidate that can act like a true commander in chief that can get us out of this mess that all presidents of this country have put us in.

I’ll say this, let the 1 in 4 leave the United States. These make up nearly 75% of the Hollywood libertards and the other left leaning SOB’s that make up nearly all of the population of California and who in their right mind would give a crap if they go. These are your socialist people like Bernnie Sanders and your very rich demoCRAP’s that make up the New England and upper western states. America would be heading in the RIGHT DIRECTION!!!! The idiots that take these polls are plain stupid, do they actually believe that a quarter of the population would leave the country if Trump were elected, they would stay and be made to live with the same crap we’ve had to live with the last seven plus years.

  • Dennis

There is no way those whining demoralized, live off the government, libtards are gonna actually leave! You can expect them to act like jackasses though, like the Illegal aliens did in Costa Mesa at the Trump rally…..
I do so hope that Trump gets elected and hopefully turn this out of control country around!

This has been happening since Obama became President because of his confiscatory policies. It’s is push back to Obama!

I think we should put forth a concerted effort to encourage all Liberals to leave the USA if Trump is elected President. Wouldn’t that be great if they all left?!?

One poll suggesting that 1 in 4 Americans would consider leaving if Trump is elected.

I call BS on that statement.

I can’t believe people would pay to hand in their passports, instead of allowing them to expire. It shows that we certainly aren’t losing any brain power.

  • joe

It is no great loss of those who so easily forfeit their U.S. citizenship over a political “leader” whose incumbency cannot last over 8 years.

  • uhptony

Is Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton in that number? How about Barbara Strisand and George Clooney? Hopefully they will join in.

  • mike

They are leaving because of the wave of muslims coming to America,In other words they are afraid something may happen to them. But these are the same libturds who say let them in.It is not because of Trump they are just cowards and do not deserve to be called an American

  • Smart Southerner

I read an article a couple of years ago that said elderly Americans were leaving the USA, denouncing their citizenship, then re-entering as Illegal Aliens because they get way more benefits as Illegals than as US citizens.

  • Alex Ferguson

Matters not one whit, since rapist/wife-beater* Donald tRump has NO CHANCE at the presidency……..

*as attested to in SWORN TESTIMONY

    • Smart Southerner

Still regurgitating the Cruz lies & agenda?

    • Smart Southerner

I really don’t see how you will be able to stand living in America if Trump is elected President. Can I help you pack?

  • nokabosh

Lefties hate America. They view themselves as Kings/Queens and everyone else as serfs. They wouldn’t be on the left otherwise.

Many US citizens have moved out of the US looking for a more relaxed, carefree place where they can rear their children in a better ambiance, not because they are criminals running away from their crimes. Many are tired of the corruption they see in the country and nothing is done to stop it. Example, for years we have been hearing about impeaching Obama; he has only a few months left, supposedly, in office and no impeachment process has started. Most of the corruption, especially in government, is owed to the man in the WH. The citizens know it, but no politician wanta to touch it. People are tired, especially young couples with small children, have moved to the Caribbean, Australia, some parts of Europe where they think can give their children a less corrupt atmosphere. Some have settled in those countries and have started their businesses. They live a peaceful, relaxed, carefree life which is what we all are entitled to have.

Good riddance, I’ve traveled all over the world and have not found any country I would rather live in

  • Varmint~

If your leaving because of Trump, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, I can understand it if your leaving because of Hitlary!

    • Alex Ferguson

“you”—how sadly typical of the Fright Wing……..

      • Jon Ockunzzi

Do you stereotype everyone? Blacks? Mexicans? Muslims? Or just conservatives? By the way, your “comment” fits the liberal stereotype perfectly. Not that I care. Just sayin’.

      • Smart Southerner

You’ve been reading too many Left Wing Commie blogs.

  • ssilv48

The sooner they leave, the better of America will be.
