North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue said Friday that a new constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage makes her state “look like Mississippi.â€
The voter-approved amendment, which defines marriage between a man and woman as the only legal union, is bad for North Carolina’s image, Perdue told WITN.
“It’s wrong for North Carolina, clearly and simply,†she said. “People around the country are watching us and they’re really confused to have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights of people including the civil rights marches back in the ‘50s and ’60s and ’70s. Folks are saying, what in the world is going in North Carolina? We look like Mississippi.â€
On Tuesday, 61 percent of voters approved the ban. North Carolina law had already banned same-sex marriage, but the passage of the amendment means civil unions and possibly other types of domestic partnerships will no longer be legally recognized.
