Steve Bannon, the executive chairman of Breitbart News, is stepping down from the news organization, the news outlet confirmed Tuesday.
The change comes days after conservative megadonor Rebekah Mercer cut ties with Bannon after a new tell-all about the Trump White House revealed he made unflattering comments about the president and his family.
Mercer holds a minority stake in Breitbart.
Breitbart confirmed Bannon stepped down in a statement on their website and said he would assist with a “smooth and orderly transition.”
“I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform,” Bannon said in a statement.
A source close to Bannon told the Washington Examiner the former White House aide’s political activities had begun to distract from Breitbart’s news operation.
That source said Bannon was ultimately confronted with a choice between his political activism and his role at Breitbart.
Bannon was appointed executive chairman of the news organization in 2012, but left to join the Trump campaign as its chief executive in August 2016. He then went on to serve as White House chief strategist until he left the administration last year.
