Trump picks charter school advocate Betsy DeVos for education secretary

President-elect Donald Trump selected a charter school advocate and GOP donor from Michigan on Wednesday to be education secretary.

Betsy DeVos becomes the second woman chosen to fill a spot in Trump’s Cabinet. Earlier Wednesday, Trump named South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations earlier in the day. Both Cabinet-level positions require Senate confirmation.

While some initially cheered Haley’s selection, despite her limited experience on the international stage, the DeVos choice faced criticism even before it was formally announced Wednesday. Conservatives warned that DeVos, a longtime Republican donor, previously supported the Common Core education standards that Trump railed against during the campaign.

Trump, who was at his Palm Beach estate Wednesday for the Thanksgiving holiday, called DeVos “a brilliant and passionate education advocate.”

DeVos, from Michigan, is a longtime advocate for charter schools and school vouchers. She currently leads the advocacy group, American Federation for Children, and sits on the board of the Jeb Bush-led Foundation for Excellence in Education.

I agree that we should do away with the federal dept. of education. The choice of someone who is for charter schools is fine wit me. The only reason charter schools exist is because the regular public education is everything but education.

The NEA won’t like that, and they are a powerful leftist radical union.
Personally, I don’t see why we need a Federal Dept of Ed.
It’s done more harm than good.

Maybe she’s the one to shut it down.

      • Karll

        I’m hoping that’s the case.
Hopefully, Carson will oversee the dismantling of HUD, as well.

How much money has been thrown Detroit’s way since LBJ’s “Great Society”? Does anybody know?

In any case, that city has among the highest per student school budgets in the country. Yet about half the city is functionally illiterate.

    Go figure.

    • Karll

Same thing in my state, the People’s Republic of NJ. We’ve been
taking money from the suburban schools and funneling it into inner
city schools (Newark, Paterson, Camden, Irvington, etc.) for decades. The avg spending/student in the inner cities is now 25-30k, yet the
test scores and drop out rates haven’t improved one iota in all that time.
Money does not buy self-respect or remove the effects of a dysfunctional upbringing. It’s a failed experiment, yet the left votes for
MORE money for these districts every year.

      • reggie

What ever happened to all that money (f)uckerberg donated to Newark?

        • Karll

Like most of the money sent to our inner cities, it was siphoned off by the corrupt democrats in charge.

Cannot make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

At 25 to 30 k a pop, better just to put them to work cleaning toilets and collecting garbage. As antique farm equipment, they are not much good anywhere else.

I agree that money is not the thing causing the public education to be a failure, it is the thieves who head the thing who are getting fat while the poor students play in the streets.

This is the state that Bill-Bob Clinton said needed to be turned over to the muslims to rebuild! It is said that Michigan will become the first all muslim state at the rate it’s going! That needs to be dealt with!!

That is a great question and it is probably one that will never be investigated. Have you seen Trey Gowdy lately trying to get people like the head of the secret service to tell him, when the secret service received a subpoena from congress they sent pages that were heavily redacted. He could not get the man to say why when they received a subpoena they felt they had to redact almost all of it. Trey said that the congress has the right to see the information and all the information. It must be for the same reason they have not put Hillary in jail for destruction of evidence. She got a subpoena and deleted 52 % because she said that was personal. Don’t break the law and use a server that you know was illegal and then call it private information. A Crook is a crook is a crook, no matter which party they say they represent. They are elected to represent the people in their districts, not some but all.
