Ben Carson criticizes Romney for anti-Trump speech, calls for GOP unity

by Michael Walsh  |  published on March 4, 2016

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo News, Ben Carson declined to say that he is officially dropping out of the 2016 presidential race.

The retired neurosurgeon spoke to Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric Thursday afternoon from his home outside Baltimore about the state of the Republican Party and his political future following disappointing Super Tuesday results.

He said he’d make a more definitive announcement Friday when he is scheduled to address the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Carson did say he thinks too much attention has been paid to party infighting and not enough to each candidate’s policies.

“I want people to start thinking about the real issues that are threatening America right now,” he said. “Those issues are not how big someone’s hands are or how long someone’s nose is.”

Man! today’s session on this forum reveals how divided and confused we are.

  • Mister Vice

Reince Priebus (sic?) needs a new job. He has done nothing good for the RNC due to his inept micromanager style.

  • Seedman

Mitt Romney is entitled the exercise of free speech as much as any other American. I have heard nothing of what he said of Don Juvenile as being false.

  • Mister Vice

I hate the Trump campaign as much as anyone but Romney needs to SHUT UP and SIT DOWN!

  • Roy

Ben Carson is a scholar and a gentleman. He has class and he’s absolutely right. If the Republican Party doesn’t unite they will be a classic example of Lincoln’s ‘house divided’. THEY WILL FALL by the wayside of history. This primary season will decide the survival or death of the Republican Party as a political force in this country.

  • mudguy1

The GOP establishment and the RNC are mostly responsible for the lack of party unity. They hate Trump and Cruz and many of them would rather see Hillary win than either one of them.

    • Roy

That’s because they know Hillary would maintain the status quo so they could go on with their corrupt business as usual. That’s why they are so scared of Cruz and Trump. If either of those two win they will shake the District of Corruption to its very foundations and many of the institutions that rest on it will crack and shatter. They may do it in different ways and in different courses but they will both rock the boat to the point of capsizing it.

I can’t stand Cruz after he committed voter fraud in Iowa. Proved to me he was nothing but a dirty politician, and cruz fanatics can spin it all they want, he purposely spread the word, along with the most hated dirty politician in Iowa, Steve King, who is no stranger to dirty tricks, that Carson dropped out even when they were told that was absurd and Carson was staying in the race. We polled thousands of Iowans, not only the man Campaign headquarters in Des Moines, but all over Iowa, and well over 44,000 people were caucusing for Carson! That is a large number of people for Iowa. After Cruz’s pulled this dirty trick Carson received half and we all know who got the other half. He wasn’t Number One in Iowa, Ben was expected to come in 2nd behind Trump, Cruz Campaign knew it, and they were desperate. THE IOWA COORDINATOR knows this, we received an email from her about this situation, it is called voter fraud. The Governor knows this and said Cruz should give Carson at least two delegates, and all the people who were voting for Carson knew it because they voted for Cruz so their vote would count. It backfired here, because when they found out that Cruz’s Campaign pulled this dirty trick on them, they said they would never vote for him or back him. He’s a dirty politician, I thought we were finished and learned our lessons from Ivy League Attorneys!

Tapper: “It’s very unusual, to announce that you’re going home to rest for a few days, not going on to the next site.”

Bash: “Very unusual…Look, if you want to be president of the United States, you don’t go home to Florida. That’s just bottom line, that’s the end of the story. If you want to signal to your supporters that you’re hungry, that you want them to get out and campaign, you have to get out there too, it’s very unusual.”

        Tapper: “Very unusual.”

Wolf Blitzer: “Very significant news indeed.”

CNN then tweeted: “After the #IACaucus, @RealBenCarson plans to take a break from campaigning.”

Based on all of this, everyone in the political world assumed – correctly, as it turns out – that Carson was preparing to end his campaign. And the next week, Carson fired half his staff.

Nonetheless, Carson pushed the notion that Cruz had stolen Iowa from him; Donald Trump suggested the same. Even Marco Rubio jumped on board.

sked about it during the CNN debate on Saturday night, here’s what Cruz said:

Let me tell you the facts of what occurred for those who are interested in knowing. On Monday night, about 6:30 p.m., CNN reported that Ben was not going from Iowa to New Hampshire or South Carolina. Rather, he was, quote, “Taking a break from campaigning.” They reported that on television, CNN’s political anchors, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer, said it was highly unusual and highly significant. My political team saw CNN’s report breaking news and they forwarded that news to our volunteers, it was being covered on live television…. I regret that subsequently, CNN reported on that — they didn’t correct that story until 9:15 that night. So from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15, that’s what CNN was reporting. Subsequent to that initial report, Ben’s campaign put out a statement saying that he was not suspending his campaign. I wish that our campaign staff had forwarded that statement. They were unaware of it, I wish that they had, that’s why I apologized.

Carson then responded that CNN had issued a correction tweet a few minutes later. And CNN released a statement ripping Cruz:

The Cruz campaign’s actions the night of the Iowa caucuses had nothing to do with CNN’s reporting. The fact that Senator Cruz continues to knowingly mislead the voters about this is astonishing.

Remember That Time The Cruz Campaign Said Carson Was Done And He Went Ballistic? Well, He’s Done.

Establishment Smiles As Grassroots Conservative Favorites Go Full Clownshow

What nonsense. Cruz’s team explicitly cited CNN’s reporting in its emails. Carson himself has sent emails blaming CNN. Cruz correctly pointed out what happened on CNN, as you can see from the transcript above. And while CNN reporters tweeted that Carson wasn’t dropping out, as did Carson staffers, CNN did not report on air that Carson was staying in the race until later in the evening.

So CNN’s ridiculous ass-covering is just that: ridiculous ass-covering. There’s a reason Carson’s fundraising email sent after the controversy blamed only CNN: “It was yet another example of creating rather than reporting the news, and it’s wrong.”

      • mudguy1

Well the GOP Establishment and media has gotten to you. Believe what you want but you all wrong. They are doing to Cruz what they tried to do to Reagan. Why aren’t you saying anything about CNN and Carson’s spokesperson who should have know better than to even talk to CNN and then not to make it clear what Carson’s intentions were. CNN started of it all.

    • k9maiden

I will vote for the candidate, Carson asked all of us to vote, no matter how imperfect the candidate is, but I am praying it isn’t the guy posing as a great Christian when he is a sleazy, dirty politician. The proof is there, google it, and what campaign ever takes it upon themselves to announce another candidate has dropped out? That is unheard of, the candidate is allowed to hold a press conference at their convenience and announce they are no longer running. Cruz people, tell me if you would be backing Carson if Carson Campaign pulled this on the fraud? What gall! This was the downhill spiral, then the media wouldn’t allow any time for Carson, they wouldn’t call on him in debates, because they loved the Latino bickering with Trump and nothing waas ever solved or discussed about the real issues. How infantile! When you know Dr. CArson’s entire background, how brilliant he is, asked to be Surgeon General by two Administrations and turned them down, he wasn’t looking for a job, and then asked by the Republicans of Congress to consider running for Speaker, plus all his very successful business endeavors that afforded him to make over 43 million in his life, 67 honorary doctorate degrees, the only candidate who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the highest civilian medal given, Chair of Kellogg for years, on the board of Cost Co for 18 years, head of Neurosurgery at John Hopklns, the most prestigious hospital in the world, the youngest EVER to hold that position, one of 89 living legends as selected by the Library of Congress, the most admired man in America, selected by Gallup as the most admired man in America, selected by CNN and Time as one of 20 top scientist, and started the CArson Fund to combat the crisis of education in this country. When all other scholarship programs like this have failed, Carson’s started in 1994, is so successful it is now in all 50 states and has been able, through the keen mind of this man and his wife, put over 8,000 kids through college. His tax plan was raved about by Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Paul Ryan and experts in the field, said to bring back the middle class and greatly improve the economy of this country. His healthcare plan is phenomenal, but no one would know because the “so called” Conservatives screaming for a change really weren’t interested in hearing Dr. Carson in debates, they wanted to hear the “Super Bowl” of insults and infantile bickering. Then the nerve to say that Carson was sleeping when you didn’t even care to hear from him! Congratulations, all of you have been on the same mission so many liberals and even Conservatives were in 2008, remember the “Hope and Change” and do you recall how that worked out? Same thing happening here. You deserve everything you get from the same dirty politicians, the same GOP Puppet, both, funded by lobbyist, special interest and in Cruz case, his largest funder is Wall Street. Dr. Carson was drafted by “We the People, funded by We the People!” Carson has so many ethics, refuses to stoop to the level of these career politicians and liars, that he refused every penny offered by the same groups funding the other two top people. Dr. Carson refused to be held accountable to anyone but the American people. Very much like Lincoln and you never bothered to know what he could have done for this country. Soft spoken was also Lincoln, honest Abe is also Carson. I will vote for the lesser of two evils again, but I can tell you this, you people passed up a one in a lifetime chance to get our country back and the respect that our country had at one time, under Reagan, back. Carson is far from weak, he wouldn’t have headed the most intricate teams in medical science, he wouldn’t have been the youngest Chief of Neurosurgery at John Hopkins, if he were weak. I am astonished that even Conservatives don’t do their research or bother to listen to a candidate on a one on one basis to find out who they are and all about their issues. I am angry that once again, I have to vote for one of the three stooges.

I like Mr. Carson but he really didn’t have much chance from the beginning. He was and still is considered by the elitist establishment Republicans to be an” outsider.” When we went to our local court house to place our vote for the primary Mr. Carson was found – finally-( three pages over on one page alone with Mr. Donald J. Trump. ) Mr. Trumps name was listed last. We had to look for it ! No doubt that has been the norm in most all of these States where we have computer voting. In Texas, the news called it for Ted Cruz even before the poll time had ended or any votes had time to be counted from any district. Giving him nearly 40 thousand votes before anyone else was noted. Announcing him as winner up front. The establishment are now attempting to throw this election and when they do – just to stop Mr. Trump, they will throw this election directly to Hillary Clinton.

        • TonysTake

How can there be unity when Ted Cruz supporters act like this? Mormon madman goes to far. Gets a visit from the FBI.

The voting machine company SOE in Florida was purchased by a company in Spain with 5 letters, owned or co/owned by Soros. According to the article, your vote cast will go first to Spain and back in a nano second, enabling the oversees company to see the vote first. And if they do not clear the machine every evening, that days votes would be added on to the next day. In absentee voting that would be a biggie. The article went on to ralate how it works in the regular voting which I admit it was over my head as I definitely am not a computer person, but, what did hit me odd was, under the old paper voting in absentee, one party in particular would send one of the heads in the courthouse, along with his sec, into absentee voting and the head would strike up an interesting and fun topic of conversation with the 2 people at the table who handle the voting process. He would position himself between the two and what his secretary was doing in the cabinets behind him, who was stooped down with the drawers open changing, actually replacing the envelopes. It took approx 20 yrs to catch this man. You would be amazed how far a president or any famous long standing political figure can reach/ The only reason I am mentioning this is a very recent, so recent that the ink is hardly dry on the newspapers, of a political figure, of some kind, being within the no go area where people vote. A famous person can be as much and probably more of a distraction and coercing figure that any placard or hat or whatever. These people just never stop, and I’ve been wracking my brain as to which president was running for their second term then what I witnessed happened.

  • TeaTephi

Well Ben Carson is a nice guy I must say…..but unfortunately as we all know, nice guys finish last.

    • Mister Vice

Or, as in Bruce Jenner’s case, they finish sitting with their legs crossed!
