Manchin, Toomey both interested in reviving gun control push

by Colby Itkowitz | The Washington Post  |  published on June 23, 2015

Gun-ControlIn the wake of the Charleston shooting, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) are considering ways to renew their failed push to pass meaningful gun-control legislation.

In separate interviews Tuesday night, at a reception before a ceremony hosted by Sandy Hook families where Toomey was honored, the senators discussed their desire to find a new way forward.

“We want to make sure we have the votes. Pat’s going to have to, and I’ll work with him, to get some of our colleagues on the Republican side,” Manchin said, adding that he hasn’t talked directly to Toomey about a revival.

Toomey will not get my vote again.

  • believe

PEOPLE of WV have NO respect for MANCHIN. He is a trader to the people/.. and there are a lot of them have there guns pointed in his direction.
so if he was smart he would try to remember the oath he took.

  • Richard Schwartz

Strictest gun laws states have the most murders. Joe is a nice boy but he doesn’t pay attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ralph Sinamon

The elected ones continue to IGNORE the Constitution! The phrase “Shall NOT be infringed “, makes it clear that the ONLY LEGAL legislation regarding guns, involves repealing or amending the 2nd Amendment!

I don’t understand why NONE of the pro-gun/2nd Amendment groups do not pursue this particular FACT!

  • bobnstuff

I guess everyone here believes that anyone should be able to have a gun, no questions asked. Even the mentally ill or felons. I’m sorry but there are some people who shouldn’t have guns and passing a back ground check isn’t to much to ask.

    • TopCop1988

There are many different levels of mental illness (are you out to deny anorexics of their 2nd Amendment rights, as just one example???), and convicted felons may only be guilty of ”paper” felonies, and not violent crimes.

BTW: back in the days of the so-called ”Wild West” convicted felons were handed their guns back as they left the state or territorial prisons after paying their ”debt to society.”

      • bobnstuff

Back in the days of the old west you checked you gun when you went into town. Your gun was a six shooter or more likely a shot gun and no one talk about 2nd amendment rights because the supreme court hadn’t said it was your right and everyone how cared know it dealt with militias.

Do you agree that there are some people
        who should not have guns?

        • TopCop1988

”Back in the days of the old west you checked you gun when you went into town.”

Only a small few towns had such an ordinance: Tombstone being the most famous.

”…the supreme court hadn’t said it was your right and everyone how cared know it dealt with militias.”

“I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.”
          — George Mason, in Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution, Elliot, Vol. 3, June 16, 1788

”Do you agree that there are some people who should not have guns?”

Yes: and those people should be segregated from the guns, rather than trying to segregate the guns from them by disarming the 99.5% (+/-) of gun owners who never misuse guns.

          • bobnstuff

The first law most towns past was gun control.

Read United States vs Miller 1939 and United States vs Cruikshank 1876 to see what the SCOUS had to say about the 2nd amendment. It wasn’t till District of Columbia vs Heller 2008 that the court said that there was a right to bare arms.

I believe that you should be able to own any gun you want but you should have a license to buy ammo. I have heard that the President want to take your gun away. You do know he has never said anything of the sort. None of the gun control laws
put forth have said that your guns should be taken away. Check it out if you don’t believe me. Everything the president says can be found
at Whitehouse.Gov I have looked and looked but they just aren’t there. The people saying he wants to take your guns are Rush and his friends. Mr Limbaugh first said it in 2009 right after the President took office and others have repeated it since but it has never been said by the President.

[Did the Wild West Have More Gun Control Than We Do Today?]
”The first law most towns past was gun control.”

As usual, pro-gun control advocates always post false and/or misleading ”facts” about wild-west gun ordinances.

Tombstone did _not_ generally prohibit carrying guns in town: the ordinance prohibited carrying concealed ”DEADLY WEAPONS”:

”Read United States vs Miller 1939 and United States vs Cruikshank 1876 to see what the SCOUS {SIC} had to say about the 2nd amendment.”

I’ll take ”US v. Miller for $500, Bob.”

First off, this case has been misused for many, many years, as it wasn’t intended to be a final adjudication. It was, in fact, an interlocutory appeal and the 1939 SCotUS actually remanded the case back to the trial court for further deliberation as to whether or not there was a ”militia utility” for a short-barreled shotgun.

            The court wrote:

”The Court (actually, the avowed racist Justice James Clark McReynolds) cannot take judicial notice that a shotgun having a barrel less than 18 inches long has today any reasonable relation to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, and therefore cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees to the citizen the right to keep and bear such a weapon.”

Since the Court illegally took and ruled on the case ”ex parte” (neither Jack Miller nor Frank Layton was represented before the Court, so the case was heard from only the prosecution side) it was sent back for evidence of the weapon’s ”militia utility.”

Funny; since it was well known that short-barreled shotguns; as just one example: the ”blunderbus”; was used by United States Marines during the Revolutionary War: primarily to take out the rigging of the British sailing warships…as well during boarding parties assault on the enemy crew.

            Back to the trial court:

When the case was remanded, the defense attorney, Paul Gutensohn, had ”moved on,” Jack Miller was dead and Frank Layton, not having an attorney or money to hire one, merely took a plea bargain, so the short-barreled shotgun’s history as a military/militia weapon was never introduced.

BTW: today ”Miller” would not have been heard, as the defense must be present for such a hearing to be held (really wasn’t legal then either…but that’s another story).

    Two more traitors.

  • Dolores Adams

What would these two gun-haters do, if someone would come after their families and they had no way to protect them? Regular democratic crap, but one is a RINO.

  • kranvornip

Stupidity is genuinely distasteful, but when it is spewed from the mouths of our officials, it has a particularly offensive flavor. Let me say this about gun control. The fact that I own many myself, and the fact that I have no intention of having any Government take them away from me is not the point. The point is that this fool in Charleston used the LEAST effective tool to pursue his madness. If he had any ingenuity at all he could have used just a few gasoline bombs and killed EVERYONE in the building, and destroyed their monument as well- good thing monsters like him don’t have much of a brain. I suppose that if he had done as I pointed out, that these same two idiots would now be pushing for gasoline control- or glass bottle control- or rag control, or matches control….. and where does it stop? None of those things are lethal weapons- including guns. Take a look at your arm- go to the end, and look at your hand….. THAT’S THE LETHAL WEAPON! Gun control…. OK, if you want REAL gun control, there is only one way. ONE LICENSE, ONE SET OF RULES- NOT 50. Make the second amendment a federal issue and not a states right. You cant have 50 different set of rules that makes things legal in one state and not in another- all you get is the chaos we have. Do you think politicians are WILLING to settle this matter if it gets them elected? Politicians don’t give a S#!T about real gun control- not when they can rally behind it every time a tragedy like this happens and they can get their incompetent asses reelected using it as a platform.

    • cactusbob

REAL gun control is achieved by having a steady hand. The politicians aren’t pursuing gun control to reduce killings, they want a disarmed public for their own power purposes so it is safer for their forces to take unconstitutional actions, like confiscating firearms. It’s already happening right now, to many people who are “deemed” to have forfeited their 2nd Amendment rights. Those “dead white men” were uncommonly brilliant in writing the Constitution that we now have, but socialistic forces in Congress are being given the upper hand in tearing it down.

  • kasper-ghost

So, does this mean it’s time to buy more cars, axes, scissors, knives, bats, almost anything that can be used as a weapon. What a bunch of traitorous morons. Does this mean they are not protected? HA! Bet they have armed guards, AND….their own guns. So, let’s add hypocrytes to the list too.

  • KDC

I was going to say something here, but decided I’m going to say it to Toomey instead.

  • GUN CONTROL? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Your feeble attempts at trying to suppress our 2nd amendment rights are just that…FEEBLE! Gun control is “Using Both Hands”! Please do not attempt to take mine, there will be a problem!

    • cactusbob

For years, Toomey has been quietly pursuing gun registration and controls, but he is seldom identified as an enemy of the 2nd Amendment. It’s time that conservative voters realized this, and perhaps a REAL conservative will emerge to run against him. For the record, Pat, YOU’RE DEAD TO ME! And I’m not even on Shark Tank.

  • well We, The People ARE NOT, Molon Labe ya criminal pricks…gotta keep you criminal bastiches in check now more than ever, it’s called the 2nd Amendment there felons, do some research on the Constitution ya traitorous POS

    • bobnstuff

Did you know that the first use of the well ordered militia was by George Washington to put down a rebellion in Western Pa. And that this is why we are to have guns. It’s not to protect you from your government but to protect the government from you. That’s how George saw it.
