David Letterman has made no secret of his preference for President Obama this election year, but he did discuss a few tough issues with him last night.
They included the rough economy, the deaths in Libya, and government gridlock
Of course, there was also some Letterman-like silliness.
When Obama said he feels responsible for the economy, Letterman said: “I need to someone to blame … Can I blame Biden?”
“I’ve tried that,” Obama joked, but quickly added of his vice president: “I love Joe.”
Letterman also told Obama he looked good, and asked the president how much he weighed.
About 180, Obama said, then telling Letterman: “You look good.”
“You haven’t seen me naked,” Letterman said.
Obama: “We’re going to keep it that way.”
More serious topics included the Mitt Romney tape, in which the Republican candidate say 47% of the voters will back Obama because they are dependent on government.
“I don’t know what he was referring to. One of the things I learned as president is you represent the entire country. If you want to be president, you have to work for everyone. All of us make mistakes …What I think people want to know, though, is you’re not writing off a big chunk of the country.”
Obama also cited the election four years ago:
“When I won in 2008, 47 percent of the American people voted for John McCain. They didn’t vote for me and what I said on election night was: â??Even though you didn’t vote for me, I hear your voices, and I’m going to work as hard as I can to be your president.”
Letterman also asked Obama about last week’s killings of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya, and the anti-Islam film that triggered it:
“The message we have to send to the Muslim world is that we expect you to work with us, to keep our people safe, and as offensive as this video was — and obviously we denounced it, the United States government had nothing to do with it — that’s never an excuse for violence.”
