Sarah Palin is set to hold court down the street from this month’s Republican National Convention, but said Sunday she won’t speak at the main event.

The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee said that while she supports presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, she instead will “focus on grassroots efforts to rally Independents and the GOP base to elect Senate and House members so a wise Congress is ready to work with our new President to get our country back on the right path.”

She said in her statement that “this year is a good opportunity for other voices to speak at the convention and I’m excited to hear them.”

It was not clear from Palin’s announcement if she had actually been invited to make a speech at the Aug. 27-30 convention in Tampa.

Hers was not among the names of headliners released this month — although the top of her 2008 ticket, Sen. John McCain, was — andNewsweek reported last month that the Romney campaign wouldn’t comment on her apparent absence at the time.

But Palin is still expected to be in town during the convention.

The political action committee for the former Alaska governor earlier this year put down $4,500 to reserve space at Channelside Bay Plaza, which is down the street from the Tampa Bay Times Forum where the convention will be held.

The space at Channelside still allows her access to some of the 15,000 journalists expected to cover the convention.
