Puerto Rico debt becomes constitutional fight on the right

Republicans are waging a battle over the Constitution when it comes to helping Puerto Rico.

Supporters of Speaker Paul Ryan’s legislation to help Puerto Rico handle billions in debt before a critical July bond payment deadline point to Article IV of the Constitution in arguing they have a responsibility to help the territory.

Article IV stipulates that Congress has power “to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory.”

Conservatives, never shy about a constitutional debate, have a counter-argument.

Doesn’t “to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory” mean we can dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations? Maybe we could appoint hitlery to “fix” it, without ANY funding? That’ll show how good she is without her clinton foundation.

WE SHOULDN’T BAIL OUT PR IT IS THEIR CROOKED GOVERMENT CHECK OUT THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS WE CAN’T BAIL OUT EVERY COUNTRY THAT GOES BROKE BECAUSE OF POOR GOVERNERING

Why would we bail out Puerto Rico, when we are billions of dollars in debt. We should think about our own nation first.

  • Anthony Guastella

This is insanity. Puerto Rican governmental thieves cause this mess and expect the Worlds largest debtor nation to pay the Bill? Outrageous. Time to give this territory full independence and let them work it out for themselves. We have no funds whatsoever.

Puerto Rico should have to pay off their debt. I’m tired of the taxpayers getting stuck with the bills for every incompetent government unit. The Puerto Ricans should be forced to pay for the financial mismanagement of their island.

Perhaps Ryan could dip into his own pockets and those that are supporting this agenda instead of the citizens in our country which is already massively in debt. McConnell has plenty, so does McCain, I bet democrats Harry Reid and his cronies would even toss in a few million out of their own pockets. Start a super pac for Puerto Rico and take up donations to pay their debt or send them some of the refugees from Syria, that ought to bring big money to their economy. Or even Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerman, they could probably pay it off out of their philanthropic foundations and never miss a dime, sort of a pay back for all that America has given them.

Is Paul Ryan a moron or what? Why Donald Trump would even seek his support is within the beltway logic. Trump should seek to stay away from this imbecile.
