Trump on healthcare: ‘Why should Congress not be paying what public pays?’

July 31, 2017

Cost of health carePresident Trump on Monday blasted ObamaCare, saying the healthcare legislation is “hurting people” and questioning why Congress shouldn’t be paying the same as the public.

“If ObamaCare is hurting people, & it is, why shouldn’t it hurt the insurance companies & why should Congress not be paying what public pays?” Trump tweeted Monday.

The GOP’s effort to fulfill its promise to repeal and replace ObamaCare collapsed in the Senate last week. Three GOP senators joined the Democratic senators in voting down a pared-down “skinny” repeal bill.

Trump has taken to Twitter several times over the past few days to blast ObamaCare and urge Republicans not to give up on repealing and replacing it.

If they had to live under what they voted on we would all be better off.

  • mesaman says:

Three cheers for our President! But don’t stop there Mr President. Ask congress to evaluate why they should have a full retirement after one term as a congressman. Ask congress why their dependents are given favorable treatment in paying back student loans. In short, ask congress to treat themselves as equal, not superior, to any citizen of the US/

  • Not A Farmer says:

If Congress and the Senate had to use the same Healthcare system as the American people, we would not have to debate healthcare any longer.

  • ONTIME says:

Long standing question and do not think the public is not PO’d about the sneaky way the congress and Barry Sotero misused the law again, in no way is the congress a biz and the frigging lies these people live on tell us we need changes in the way our paid for reps hold office…time for term limits for all elected and appointed and ballot driven national consumption taxation to replace the dinosaur, untrustworthy IRS income tax…We the people need trust and assurance that we can influence those who we elect and appoint…….America for Americans and MAGA!!!!!…………Leadership in this country is a privilege, you are elected and not anointed…..

  • Tiger says:

Trump can educate the people on what is going on and this is going to bite the Progressives in the ass when people learn what congress gets and all government workers.

McCain will soon die; maybe the dumbasses who elected him will get it right; then maybe the pos from The Peoples Republic of Vermont might swallow a fly–perhaps she’ll die. We might get more RINOs off the earth and Congress can get some work done.

  • NM Leon says:

    A bit of misinformation here.

Until 2014 Congress critters and staff got Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, or FEHBP the exact same program as all federal employees. FEHBP is subsidized at 72% of the weighted average of all FEHBP premiums.

From 2014 Congress critters and staff have been required to use the Obozocare exchange, specifically the District of Columbia’s small business health options program (SHOP) exchange, also known as DC Health Link. They do retain the same 72% subsidy given to all fed employees as long as they choose the Gold Plan.

That 72% subsidy is in line with what most large corporations provide.

  • McFerguson says:

Good question! And, frankly, I didn’t know they were exempt. I support any effort to ensure that these toads incur the same exorbitant fees for inferior medical treatment as the average citizen does. Let ObamaCare float their boats, too!

  • Ken says says:

I have asked that question for years. Congress DOES NOT have a clue as to how Medicare, Medicaid or obamacare (aka the unAffordable Care Act) works and costs a fortune to use. Better than making them use obamacare would be for them to go uninsured and required them to pay the prices that the Medical/Pharma Industry, Insurance Industry and OUR Government negotiated when they set the “fixed price list” for the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industries – you know – the $23 bandaid and $30 aspirin and the $5,000 Emergency Room visit for two sutures in your finger. The liars that won electiion with another promise to REPEAL can go home and face voters. President Trump should write EOs to eliminate anything in obamacare that can be done by EO, Not approve any taxpayer funding for obamacare and let the BarryO scam die from it’s own excesses.

  • rosalind servello says:

Cheb your right, especially the dems who love Obamacare so much, also the Rino’s as well. As a matter of a fact, every politician should have that wonderful Obamacare…….

  • paul says:

It’s so blatantly obvious that ALL of Congress and their staff should be forced to use Obamacare without any subsidies and not exempt themselves from having to follow the law which they forced upon American citizens. No “small business exemption” because Congress IS NOT a small business, and no subsidies to reduced their out of pocket costs for “The Affordable Care Act” which they passed into law.

  • Kaiser says:

Rush Limbaugh talked about this today and said that they are on Obamacare BUT are getting the platinum care and having us pay about 70% of it. What President Trump should do is remove all of their subsidies from all the perks that they get. If he did that…there would be a mass exodus.

    1. gvette says:

You are correct. Most people don’t know the break people in the Washington cesspool get. Rush did a good job of explaining it. LO….that’s why the left hate Rush so much.

  • uhptony says:

Too bad we can’t have an old fashioned neck tie party with about 8-10 senators as guests of honor with Schumer, Pelosi and Warren thrown is for good measure.

  • bob breglio says:

What deranged people let each congressthing’s office be called a small business so they are eligible for subsidies we can’t get? Get them all off ANY subsidy and let them pay what everyone else pays and you see how quick it’s all fixed 🙂

    1. NM Leon says:

They get the exact same subsidies as every other fed employee. Being designated as small business just determined which Obozocare exchange they use.

  • Norman Fox says:

For too long these politicians have forced us to do what they wanted and not be a part of it. Hopefully we now have a President that will make these idiots toe the line. Pay for their own health care and of course they will now have to pay into social security. Strip all the bennies and watch this country get into order.

    1. Sharo says:

Sounds good, but who is going to make sure it gets done??? I agree Trump has a great agenda, but can he actually achieve his goals? He’s blocked at every turn. It’s time for a giant “march on D.C. with millions of people who love this country, DEMANDING reform! Time for a REAL sit in, and we won’t leave until we get OUR government back!!

    2. NM Leon says:

Any who took office since 1984 HAVE been paying SS the same as all fed employees (Social Security Amendments of 1983). They pay 28% of their policy costs the same as all other fed employees, but are required to get their plan through the DC Obozocare exchange for small businesses (SHOP) instead of the normal Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP).

  • Wildflowers52 says:

And I agree with everyone else regarding the FACT THAT WE EMPLOY THEM!
THEY work for US, but who would ever know? Thank You, Donald Trump. They’re plugging up the swamp drain.

  • Mountain_Goat says:

Another stupid Trump diversion to cover the fact that he’s about to pull the plug on millions of Obamacare-insured people. Calling it an end to “insurance company bailouts” can’t hide the reality — he is sticking it to decent Middle Class folks, using them as canon fodder in his soon-to-end battle with the GOP Congress. The honeymoon ended last week — the PARTY WILL BE OVER BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR.

  • Wildflowers52 says:

Of COURSE the congress and senate should have to take the exact same healthcare as we peons throughout the country have to. Why the two tiered system? The elites vs the peons. I’m so fed up with this damn Resistance movement from the left and from three of our many turncoat republicans who may as well admit they’re Democrats parading around as conservatives. This stinks. We voted for Trump and for HIS AGENDA, not Chuckie Schumer’s or Mad Maxine’s or hypocritical pretend-to-be- Catholic Pelosi’s. These elitists have made a fortune playing us and the system and they don’t want to give it up at any cost, even at the cost of the American people! Term limits!

    1. Joan Davenport says:

      1. Wildflowers52 says:

Joan, I can’t understand it. All I can think of is that the majority of voters just vote for incumbents because they’ve done absolutely no homework. I mean look at Mad Max! She’s a thief! (I’m talking about the James Brown look alike)
And MCCAIN! We need term limits right now!
        Impeach Jerry Brown.

  • Bob Montmoran says:

We live in a country where our elected congressmen have special rites that the average tax payer are excluded from.
    Insider tradeing, health care, time off at all holidays and month off vacation. some get special treatment in law inforcement {HRC example}
When are we going to wake up??

  • Jorge Rivas says:

No bailouts for insurance companies; no special privileges for Congress!

  • Rock says:

Put ALL of them on Obamacare AND remove their lifetime Social Security that they DON’T pay into ! They put nothing in, they should get NOTHING out ! No healthcare for life after office either, they pay for and get what WE have been stuck with by them !!!!!

    1. NM Leon says:

They already ARE on Obozocare (with the normal 72% fed employee subsidy).

Any that gained office after 1984 DO pay SS.

They have the same retirement as all fed employees.

      1. paul says:

        Yeah, too much.

        1. NM Leon says:

More than most of us, but considerably less than some. There are a lot of city, county, and state retirees that are making a lot more.

We taxpayers are certainly good to our employees, aren’t we?

          1. paul says:

Way too good, expecially considering how hard and how much they actually “work”.

          2. NM Leon says:

            No disagreement here.

The pensions were originally meant to be compensation for the lower pay that government workers made compared to the civilian workforce. That hasn’t been true for decades. Government workers in general now make more than their civilian counterparts plus we provide them with generous benefits and pensions.

  • Del says:

Finally, someonewho has the balls to get that atrocity out in the open. The social club that these guys have set up for themselves needs to be disolved and they need to be on the same basis as the regular people. They have set themselves up with pensions that are incredible and salaries for life and then talk about helping the people. What a shame

    1. Momma Beth says:

      A shame and a sham!

    2. ClarenceDeBarrows says:

Post of the day! Kudos to you.

    3. NM Leon says:

Nope, they get exactly the same retirement benefits as every other federal employee, though it IS a very good pension.

They can get 12.5% of their salary after age 62 if they were in office for 5 years up to a maximum of 80% for 32 years in office.

      1. Retired says:

And then they wonder why the country is going broke , they steel from SS to cover their benefits .

      2. Not A Farmer says:

Currently, members of congress are eligible for a pension dependent on the member’s age at retirement, length of service, and salary. … In 2016, congressional pay was $174,000 per year, which, at an 80% rate, equates to a lifelong pension benefit of $139,200.May 10, 2017

        1. NM Leon says:

Yes, over 62 with 32 years in office gets 80% of their highest-paid consecutive three years of service amount.

All pensions are “lifelong”. My father received almost $250k a year from his ITT pension.

  • Douglas B Briggman says:

I agree, If they can strap the US Public that pays their salaries they need and must be on what they put on us the peons

  • Dan says:

This is why I voted for Donald Trump! This is how health insurance will get fixed. When the lawmakers and their staffs are forced to eat their own cooking.

  • TAM44 says:

Especially that rotten no count 100% democrat traitor john mccain. He’s is a cancer to us conservatives.

  • Mary says:

Just another reason the swamp needs to be drained. They get special treatment at taxpayers expense.

    1. I Seigel says:

People who live in Texas and Florida – or anywhere there’s been fires, floods, storms, tornados, etc, like anywhere along the Mississippi – have
gotten special treatment at taxpayers’ expense.

Carrier in Indiana has gotten special treatment at taxpayer expense, and they’re still laying off all those workers. So has Boeing in South Carolina and Mercedes Benz in Georgia – all have gotten tax breaks at taxpayer expense.

You wanna drain those swamps, too??

      Get a clue.

  • Cheh Low says:

We demand that Congress should be on Obamacare like all of us citizens. Congress should not be exampt from it.

    1. Momma Beth says:

      1. pmbalele says:

What did Trump say – Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan should pay for health insurance as we the public do? I am sure Trump will alienate all Repubs in Congress. They don’t want to pay premium for themselves and their families. To make sure nobody complains about health insurance, I have suggested a 0.01 sales tax for everything except food items. The more you spend on expensive items such as: private jets, private luxury boats; expensive homes; expensive equipment; expensive cars or SUV and machines etc., you will pay more because the more you expose yourself to elements more and are likely you will need more medical services. With 0.01 sales tax there will be no deductibles or out of pocket premium payments. Money will e-deposited directly with IRS which will have contracts with state agencies to pay doctors and private hospitals. Most important of all people will deal with their doctors directly instead having these stupid health insurance companies tell doctors what to do with their patients. I have no idea who weaned Ryan and McConnell for they cannot think they are hurting American people. In fact I do not understand who votes them in office. Please do not vote for them next year. Let them go back to their mothers to be re-weaned.

        1. I Seigel says:

My job pays for my health care. Most employers provide health care for their employees. Union workers, office workers, athletes – all have health care provided by their employers. If you’re self-employed, you’re on your own, thru Obamacare or your own choices.

Congressmen and their staffs are paid by the federal government. The federal government employs them and provides for their health care.

What is so difficult to understand?

          1. Retired says:

You are not well informed , the percentage of fully paid health care is very small compared to decades ago .

          2. I Seigel says:

And whose fault is that? You also can include pensions. And retirement plans in general. Corporations, companies, etc have been getting stingier and stingier with their employees for decades. You can credit that (partially) to the loss of strength and influence of the unions who went to bat for workers’ pensions and health benefits.

Boeing in Charleston? Auto workers in SC and Georgia? These are just 2 glaring examples.

          3. Retired says:

Unions were only about 25% of total work force at their peek and now about 14% . When Unions only cares about the top people and not the ones paying dues is when they lost . Today the Biggest share is Gov. employees. Now look at the rust belt where all the Union jobs left and went off shore and Mexico . You ain’t the brightest light on unions .

          4. I Seigel says:

I benefit from the unions I work in. Health plan, retirement plan, a decent wage (not great) and some security that a kid out of college won’t take my job for 1/2 the pay. I get a basic health plan that I pay extra into in order to have a better plan.

Some unions shot themselves in the foot with bad attitudes and bad negotiating strategies.

          5. Retired says:

You don’t say how much a month you donate to the upper Union leaders that make ten times what you make and have a better pension than you .??? Unions mainly the Uppers got to greedy .

          6. I Seigel says:

I pay yearly dues and my employer pays my monthly work dues. I figure if I didn’t work thru the Unions, either I couldn’t work at all in the location and industry I’ve chosen or I’d have to find lesser-paying jobs with no benefits and no security. So the dues I pay – I feel – are a good trade-off.

Some of the dues money goes to staff, office admin, etc. What the leaders get in my Local is not that much. They’re not living on yachts and eating caviar. And they have to run for their offices of leadership. We elect the officers of the union. So it’s not a lifetime appointment and there are checks and balances to abuse of power or non-performance.

          7. Retired says:

.Sounds like a employer Union and not a standard Union structure .A small union .

          8. I Seigel says:

It’s an international union. My Local chapter negotiates it’s own deal to specifically benefit the local members. That’s the benefit of collective bargaining. All unions operate similarly. Some are better than others. Work rules, pay and benefits vary within the same union, whether you live in Orlando, Boston, Vegas or Los Angeles.

          9. gvette says:

You, like most, live in your small world. You see things as you are, not as they are.

          10. I Seigel says:

I and millions of union workers, company employees, teachers, police, auto workers – you mean THAT small world? I think it’s you that don’t have a grasp of what the big wide country is doing.

          11. gvette says:

LMAO…you are a union worker. Figures. On your own, you’d be nothing. Unions are for lazy people that don’t like to work, but want a paycheck.

          12. I Seigel says:

            Hah! Your ignorance is astounding.
When I was younger, I did MUCH better as an independent worker without a union. But with age comes insecurity, and knowing that a kid can’t steal my job doesn’t make me lazy, it makes me be able to sleep at night.

          13. gvette says:

You had to pay for a job!

          14. I Seigel says:

And in return I get a retirement plan and health plan paid by the employer, and I get a sense of security that I can’t be fired on a whim or because they’re a younger worker waiting in the wings that’s willing to work for half my pay. I’ve decided that the small fee I pay for those benefits is WELL worth it. Of course your opinion could be different, and since you’re completely ignorant of how unions work, I could give a rat’s ass what your opinion is. You speak from ignorance and bias.

And let me ask you this – if you hold unions and union workers in so low regard, why is it that you support Trump so strongly, who thinks it’s so important to bring back union jobs like coal mining, steel working, Carrier workers, etc? You DO realize that ALL those workers are protected by and benefit from being in unions? Do you think those coal miners would be dying to go back to work at Wal-Mart wages and few benefits?

          15. gvette says:

LOL..I’m ignorant of how unions work? LMAO…I watched unions drive up the cost of building anything.

          16. I Seigel says:

You only see one side of it.
Just like all the people who benefit from shopping a Wal-Mart, but don’t see that they’re hurting domestic industries and workers.

          17. gvette says:

There’s no one that dislikes Wally world, anymore then I do, as I see what they do when they move into an area! Stop assuming. It makes you look dumber then you already are! LOL..that’s why you are a union worker. They tell you what to do all day long.

          18. I Seigel says:

Do you think the aerospace engineers that design Boeing airplanes are being told what to do all day long? If you had an open mind and a milligram of curiosity, you could actually learn something. I know that’s too much to ask of many Trump supporters.

          19. gvette says:

Somehow I doubt you are in that line of work.

          20. I Seigel says:

Ah, ANOTHER assumption. Stop showing off your hypocrisy. You’re embarrassing yourself.

          21. gvette says:

I’ve noticed you haven’t told us what you do.

          22. I Seigel says:

And I’ve noticed that you haven’t said that as a former business owner you treated all your workers fairly, paid them a living wage, provided a retirement plan and health benefits – you know, all the things that if you had to hire union workers, you’d have been required to do. And made sure all your workers were legal and documented and you paid all the required taxes for them.

          23. gvette says:

Probably because I was an owner operator. My name was on what left my shop, and I took pride in the quality of my work. Something you know little about!

          24. I Seigel says:

Oh geez! ANOTHER assumption!!!???!! Stop it, already!!! You don’t think a union worker can take pride in his or her work, is that it? Or me in particular??

So you didn’t have employees? You didn’t have to provide benefits and pay their taxes? So you’re not a REAL business owner, like someone who actually has, you know, employees? No payrolls, no unemployment or disabled worker taxes, no having to provide a place to nurse a baby or wheelchair ramps? Not even union employees. Hah!!

Am I making an assumption here, or am I just reading what you’ve written here?

          25. gvette says:

Well, I’m the guy that built the bulding, and I’m the one that bought all the equipment, and I’m the guy that did the work, and paid all the overhead that you gutless wonders hate to do,

          26. I Seigel says:

“Gutless wonders”?? Huh? I’m sure if you were willing to pay illegal Mexicans or union tradesman their standard wages, you would have gotten good work. If you were trying to lowball the work and not pay people a fair price, then you reap what you sow.

And just so we’re clear – would I be correct to say that you used whatever tax writeoffs and incentives that NY and the Fed governments provided for your business? Depreciations, investment credits, real estate tax credits, sales tax deductions/credits, etc? All the little benefits that localities, states and the US provide for business owners to get started and stay in business (so they can hire workers and pay taxes)? And of course you declared ALL your incomes over the years and paid ALL your taxes, even when you hated to? I’m not assuming you didn’t, of course. That would be wrong of me. I’m just asking.

          27. gvette says:

What do you do for a living?

          28. I Seigel says:

It’s pointless to answer. Whatever answer I give, you’ll snicker and try to demean and degrade me.

You can’t have a logical, unemotional, reasoned discussion. You only know how to assume, attack and belittle. That’s the only way you see to “win”. Very typical for a Trump supporter. Very similar to Trump himself, actually.

Trump only values people with as much money as him. And Bannon. When you surround yourself with people like that, you just expand the swamp, you don’t drain it.

          29. gvette says:

LMAO!! You’re ashamed of what you do. When have have accomplished even a small potion of what Trump has, let me know. You still miss your nigger, I guess. The gay guy that accomplished nothing. With that, go enjoy your welfare check!

          30. I Seigel says:

Yeah whatever. I think a brick wall could have made the comments supposedly made by gvette. You’ve demonstrated that you’re about as smart as one. Now go enjoy your Social Security check – provided by the government.

          31. Retired says:

Wally World and Amazon are at the top of the list for being the far east importer , mainly China .

          32. gvette says:

            That’s why I don’t shop Wally world!!

          33. Retired says:

Reading his replies it sounds like a lot of BS, I was involved with Union leadership and they did not work the way he describes .

          34. gvette says:

Unions had their place a long time ago. Now they have gotten out of hand. Look no further then the government unions.

          35. Retired says:

They are the worst of the Bunch compared to labor unions .Obama made sure they got better increases than People on SS ,all for votes for Demon Rats .

          36. gvette says:

LOL..worded another way. DemonRATS love spending other people’s money!!

          37. Retired says:

You got that one right !

          38. I Seigel says:

I might be wrong, but I get the impression you don’t like unions and don’t respect union workers. I must be wrong. You really do respect Union workers, right?

          39. gvette says:

Unlike you, I was as business owner. Something you couldn’t do.

          40. I Seigel says:

Something I’ve chosen not to do. And I’m sure you couldn’t do what I do.

And I’m SURE you were a very successful business owner and took great care of all your workers – retirement plan, a living wage, a health plan. And all your workers were, of course, legal and documented. And you always paid all their taxes and your paperwork was excellent.

          41. Retired says:

Tell Us what you actually do that no one else can , if you died tomorrow the place would continue with out you and have someone new in your place.

          42. I Seigel says:

That wasn’t my claim. Gvette said I couldn’t be a business owner. Of course I could, if I wanted to. Gvette is just being a jerk. My claim was that Gvette couldn’t do what I do, without a lot of training and education.

A steelworkers job can be done by others – but you need experience and training and some muscles. Anyone can be a business owner. You just need courage and an imagination. There are no special skills, like a pilot, musician or professor.

          43. gvette says:

I owned and operated an automotive repair shop. I have a lot more education then you do.

          44. I Seigel says:

In your later reply you said, “Stop assuming”. And here you are making assumptions about my level of education. So, you’re an educated hypocrite! Wonderful.

Office pukes are the smartest people on Earth , just ask them . I think we found another great BS story teller. Just look at where he claims to live .

          46. gvette says:

            LOL..that’s how I see him!

          47. Retired says:

That does not tell us what you do other than posting on the job instead of working ?????

          48. I Seigel says:

I’m not getting into a juvenile pissing match with anyone here about whose job requires more education. What would be the purpose? Like I asked earlier, a steelworker and an aerospace engineer both benefit from being in a union. So do Carrier workers, coal miners, teachers, baggage handlers and supermarket workers. They all require different levels of education. Whether they have a liveable wage, a health plan and a retirement plan provided by their employers is mostly likely due to they working or not working under a union.

To claim that a business owner is more educated than a union worker is silly, juvenile, wrong and biased. Is an owner of an automotive repair shop more educated than the owner of a computer repair shop, or an airplane repair shop, or an accounting company or a movie company? It’s a stupid, pointless question. Like I said, the prime qualifications for being a business owner – of ANY kind – is courage and an imagination. Not even money is a prerequisite.

          49. Retired says:

You are digging yourself a great big deep hole with your BS , you must be ashamed of what you do. Like I said wasting time posting instead of working that is if you actually have a job????

          50. I Seigel says:

I’m actually at work right now. My union wage for today’s work is about $36/hour plus time and a half over 8 hours. I’m good at multitasking.

          51. Retired says:

You are lying just like your King Obama ,or is that you Obama ?????

          52. I Seigel says:

            Prove it

          53. Retired says:

Your BS is enough Proof . Obama

          55. Retired says:

That is right today is welfare check day and food stamp card day .

          56. I Seigel says:

I wouldn’t know. Interesting that you do.

          57. Retired says:

They have your type all over the country .

          58. gvette says:

I was a small business owner, in a state that hates small business. NY

          59. Retired says:

The Demon Rats make it hard for Small Business owners , I live in Demon Rat Country .

          60. gvette says:

I lived in central NY. That’s one of the places in the state, that wasn’t run by DemonRATS. That didn’t matter much as the state government is primary DemonRAT!

          61. Retired says:

That is what I was getting at , it starts at the state and trickles down .I walked away from my dream after I found out the Inspectors can come in and force changes that could cost thousands [ now probably Millions] . I worked with a fellow who bought a business and weeks later inspectors walked in and told him all the changes that need to be done . He escorted the inspectors out locked the door and put out the sign closed and never opened it again .. It is the Same with selling your house , all the requirements before you can sell even though you lived there for thirty years with out a problem . Relators association Is No.2 in Campaign contributions .

          62. maxx says:

Sounds like you need to take a class on the Constitution and what a “republic” means.

          63. I Seigel says:

What does your comment have to do with anything I said?

          64. tunnelrat says:

Service men and women also work for the government, so why does congress get the Cadillac plan for the rest of their life and vets get a bucket of crap?????????

          65. Retired says:

Even Tricare is going down hill since the ACA was created , mainly the drugs .

        2. maxx says:

That’s okay with me because Congress has alienated most of “we the people” anyway. Congress has not had a double digit favorability rating in over 20 years. That means they have not been performing their jobs in good faith and therefore deserved to be removed from office for dereliction of duty.

          1. Junius Graham says:

The Senate has become even worse.
