PARIS—François Hollande crisscrossed France in his yearlong campaign, telling anybody who would listen why they should elect him president: because he is a normal man.

At the start, the slogan seemed bland and uninspired. But gradually, Mr. Hollande capitalized on the French people’s apparent disaffection with the leadership style of incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.

While Mr. Sarkozy’s ability to push through difficult policies was complicated by the debt crisis, his leadership style came under fire also as being unfocused in ways that hurt his re-election effort.
