PARIS—François Hollande crisscrossed France in his yearlong campaign, telling anybody who would listen why they should elect him president: because he is a normal man.

At the start, the slogan seemed bland and uninspired. But gradually, Mr. Hollande capitalized on the French people’s apparent disaffection with the leadership style of incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.
