Tim Kaine announces he’ll run for Senate

April 6, 2011

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine is running for a Virginia Senate seat, he announced Tuesday in a video.

“I’m running for the United States Senate because America has big challenges and I’m convinced that Virginia has answers to help strengthen our nation,” the former Virginia governor says in the video.

Kaine’s interest in running for the seat has been widely reported for weeks, since one-term Democratic Sen. Jim Webb announced in February that he would not seek reelection.

Coming just a day after President Barack Obama launched his reelection bid, Kaine’s campaign is tied closely to the president. While on a fundraising swing through New York City last week, Obama offered a public boost for Kaine, saying he could not “imagine someone who has been a better partner to me, a better friend, than our very own DNC Chair Tim Kaine.”

“Tim was the first person … the first elected official outside of the state of Illinois to endorse my candidacy for president,” Obama said. “If he does [run], I want even people up here to be paying attention and to be rooting for him.”

In addition to these very public endorsements, the president is said to have privately urged Kaine to take the plunge. Kaine is seen as perhaps the only Democrat capable of winning the Virginia race, and his electoral success would bolster Obama’s in the state, and vice versa.
