U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell swept through Kentucky on his way to a sixth term Tuesday, making him the favorite to become the next majority leader.

Republicans, nationally, rode a wave of support that saw them capture Senate seats in Montana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Colorado and South Dakota, leaving them just one shy of having the 51 they need to control the Senate. A number of tight races were still undecided.

“Tomorrow, the papers will say I won this race, but the truth is, tonight we begin another race … that’s the race to turn the country around,” McConnell told the crowd of cheering Republicans gathered at the Marriott East hotel in Jeffersontown.

With 95 percent of precincts reporting, McConnell led Grimes 56-41 percent. Libertarian David Patterson got 3 percent of the vote. The 15-point win marked McConnell’s second-largest margin of victory in his 30 years in the Senate.
