A Massachusetts rivalry featuring two titans whose words regularly send partisans into a tizzy is at full tilt this election year.
Except the battle between The Boston Globe and Boston Herald won’t be settled in November.
Long before Republican Sen. Scott Brown vs. Elizabeth Warren arrived on the scene, Beantown’s flagship dailies were duking it out for scoops in one of the last big-city newspaper wars.
And the competition between the archrivals has been on open display as they scurry to dominate coverage of the nation’s premiere Senate race.
The Herald’s blockbuster scoop four weeks ago that Harvard Law School once touted Warren’s Native American heritage has only hardened feelings on the right and left about each outlet’s coverage.
To Democrats, the Herald is waging a blind crusade against Warren, single-handedly driving the coverage of her ancestry by splashing bombastic, snarky headlines on the cover of their tabloid several times a week.
“I don’t think it’s fair, no. But it’s what you would expect of them,†sniffed longtime Democratic consultant Bob Shrum, who worked for Sens. John Kerry and Ted Kennedy. “The Herald is the Fox News of Massachusetts. It appeals to a niche audience and makes money doing that. This is their kind of red meat story.â€
To Republicans, the Globe showed its liberal bent by initially downplaying the storyline, while showing no such restraint in its consistent critique of Brown. Much of the ire is aimed at the paper’s editorial page. But the Globe’s news team showed Friday that though late to the game, it is taking the Cherokee issue seriously. The newspaper’s front-page scoop stoked fresh doubts about Warren’s claim that she didn’t know Harvard had been promoting her as a minority.
