HHS Report: Average Health Insurance Premiums Doubled Under Obamacare

May 25, 2017

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a new report that reveals that individual health insurance premiums doubled under Obamacare.

Health insurance premiums doubled since 2013, the year before many Obamacare regulations and mandates took effect. The Obama administration compiled the data for the report, which was produced by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE).

HHS spokesperson Alleigh Marré stated, “With data that shows average premiums doubling nationwide and Americans paying nearly $3,000 more for health insurance per year, this report is a sobering reminder of why reforming our healthcare system remains a top priority of the Trump Administration. The status quo is unsustainable.”

According to the report:

  • Average individual insurance premiums more than doubled from $2,784 per year in 2013 to $5,712 on Healthcare.gov in 2017. This amounts to a 105% increase in health insurance premiums.
  • All 39 states using Healthcare.gov experienced increases in individual market premiums form 2013-2017.
  • Roughly two-thirds of states using Healthcare.gov had 2017 premiums double compared to 2013 health insurance premiums.
  • Three states including Alaska, Alabama, and Oklahoma saw premiums triple from 2013-2017.

The very title of O’Bama Care – Affordable Care Act – is a misnomer for a health Insurance policy. Affordable? Nothing could be farther from the truth and not even one politician in Washington is covered by it. But they scream that any other plan is only for the rich, never mind that they have NOT READ a word of it. Yet they lie about it being a death sentence for the poor.and expect us to believe it. Trump can’t “Drain the Swamp” fast enough.

  • bobnstuff says:

Why? Doesn’t it seem fishy to anyone else that only in the US are healthcare costs skyrocketing this way. I have been told that we pay more taxes then other nations and they need to be cut but every other country in the industrial world can provide healthcare to its citizens and we can’t. Doesn’t anyone else wonder why other countries seem to have better roads, better transportation systems and in many cases free higher education. We are falling behind the rest of the world in standard of living while supposedly paying higher taxes. I’m told we pay almost double what every other nation pays for healthcare but are 23rd in health. So just who is ripping us off, the government, the insurance companies or the healthcare providers? Last I heard healthcare employees are not seeing a doubling of their pay so you can’t blame them. We as a nation isn’t any less healthy then we were four years ago. Have medical service doubled? Why the costs increase? Just so you know spending per capita has gone up only 10% from the start of the ACA to the present.

    1. chw2000 says:

So BSBob, why don’t you just move to one of those countries? I doubt anyone here in the US would miss you and I’m sure you would be so much happier. At least that’s what “I’m told”.

      1. bobnstuff says:

You must really like being ripped off. Spending more and getting less.

Don’t forget it was your education system that did not teach to think for oneself and your Demonrats with their control tactics that created the situation . Then there is also the Demons in wall street who listen to the Clintons and Obama .

          1. bobnstuff says:

Greed created the situation, the democrats tried to fix it. Greed doesn’t matter to Trump and the republicans in congress. You are clueless what the education system teaches. If you want to learn to think for yourself try Common Core Math although you most likely couldn’t do it.

          2. Retired says:

Why not real math , most today can not make change.

          3. bobnstuff says:

Most kids today have only had a few years of the Common Core and as far as knowing how to make change I’ve been teaching people to do that since 1970 and it hasn’t changed except now the registers do it for them. Not only is Common core teaches how to add and subtract but logic and thinking skills. Had you ever been in a class room in the 21ts century you might understand that. These kids are learning about things that didn’t exist a few years ago. Also,Just when in the past did the education system teach people how to think for themselves? At least now they are trying.

          4. Retired says:

What is the difference of Common Core Math and what was called Modern Math decades ago ,other than name . You know yourself the writers and printers of School books is a big rip off of the tax payer .and now with computers they can no longer write . .

          5. bobnstuff says:

Modern math is using algebra for pretty much everything. It’s still not far from the arithmetic. Common Core uses things like estimation and number lines. I’m no expert on it but I had to learn enough to help may grandson. I’m lucky that my son in law is an expert, he walked me through it. Once you understand that it’s more then just memorizing tables and understand that it’s the relationship of numbers. Mostly it’s learning how to read the problems and understand what they are looking for. I hated it at first but now that I understand it a little better I can see that it teaches thinking skills and problem solving better then anything before it.

The education system today is all about connections between different things and inaugurated learning. Reading, science and math lessons all tying together. Common core is just the latest form of it but I studied the theory back in the early seventies when I though I would be a teacher, then I discovered I didn’t like kids all that much.

One other thing is changing, no more book. You are right that textbooks are a ripoff, they were when I was in college and still are. They cost to much and are out of date before they even hit the class room. Also for the cost of four textbooks they can buy a computer. The computer also give then a number of different ways to teach that let the kids go at their own pace.

They do still teach handwriting but who handwriting much anymore although I have seen computer programs that can read handwriting from the screen of a tablet.

We complain about kids today but every generation has from the beginning of time. I read a piece from the forth century BC with the same complaints I hear today.

          6. Retired says:

That is how Modern math started out , I was involved with a school at the time .Common core was with all subjects and now it will be replaced with tech . Our area has gone towards tech for over ten years . Today we still spend more on Teachers and Support than on actual Students. So instead of books today we are paying a arm and leg for the programs , because not all districts [ States ] use the same programs .It was the same with text books . Take a cell phone away from a kid and they are lost and parents are no better .

          7. bobnstuff says:

Part of the idea of Common Core was to get all the schools on the same page, make the standards for graduation to same across the country. That would make it easier for employers when hiring and colleges when excepting students. As far as teachers pay, My middle daughters first year of teaching in North Carolina pay was around $25,000 per year. The only reason she could afford to work for that little was because she was with Teach For America and they paid some on her student loans. Teach for America works on putting new college grads in underserved schools for two years. It’s a good program so of course their funds are being cut.

The average pay for teachers in the US is only $56.000 and now it’s not uncommon for them to have Masters degrees. That’s lower then almost any other job at that level of education, You don’t get rich teaching school.

I would agree that cell phones are a problem but on the plus side my grandchildren are learning to texts which seems to mean the have to learn to spell and type. My oldest Grandson like war games and has settled on WW II much of the time. He seem to think I know all about the weapons from back then so I have had to learn about them just to keep up. He also does modern day war games so I have had to learn all the new stuff to. He’s 12.

          8. Retired says:

The low starting pay is like that all over just like any other job you start at the bottom .It is the Benefit package most teachers don’t talk about .Take some extra courses and pay goes up ,plus it is not a full time job . How many weeks a year does she get off and how many did you get off . How Much did you contribute to health care and your pension compared to the Educators . That is some thing educators do not want to talk about . Most teachers in my area are racking in 80-100 a year after several years , which is more than e registered nurse makes working the whole year and they are the ones who keep you alive while being treated . So who is Under Paid ???

          9. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

Common core is a fucking joke. What we need to do is cut the federal DoE to 5 people who set a federal minimum standard for education. The Japanese agenda would be a good starting point. If a kid don’t pass, hold them back, enough with the pussification of America!

          10. bobnstuff says:

You are truly a low information troll. I don’t have time to waste explaining the ins and outs of the education system to you.

          11. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

You are just a leftist koolaid drinking troll.

          12. Retired says:

In Japan the children respect the teachers or they are out of School and not like here where the teachers have to baby sit the ones that do not want to learn .

          13. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

If your little tin gods tried to fix finance why did obummer never come up with an an annual budget? How is it that most of the daemoncrap “representatives” have made millions while in office?

          14. bobnstuff says:

He did, DOA in the congress. You are a low information troll.

          15. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

Riddle me this then brainless troll, why did the dems not work with the kenyan on the budget when they had control of the house and senate?

        2. chw2000 says:

BSBob you really are stupid. Why don’t you move to Denmark where almost everything is FREE! Oh, forgot, you only have to pay 80% in taxes. But then I’m sure you wouldn’t mind that would you.

          1. bobnstuff says:

I don’t guess you could give proof to your claim. Denmark nor any other country has taxes that high so I guess you must be high.

          2. chw2000 says:

            Check it out ass hole.

    2. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

Look at the socialist state of kalifornia, governor moonbeam just massively increased the taxes on fuel, they have an insane income tax and a high sales tax and yet the state is still loosing so much money they can’t even keep a simple spillway in one piece, I ask you, where is all the money going?

        1. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

leftist propaganda, that’s all you know how to post.

Try some actual facts troll boy.

        2. Olaf Thunderfoot says:

Where are all the California tax dollars going?

    3. Roy Fredrichsen says:

Bobnstuff- With all the Democrats complaining about replacing O’Bama Care, I am beginning to think there is something in the A C A that gives monies through the IRS to certain politicians. That is why O’Bama gave the collection of premiums to the I R S.

      1. bobnstuff says:

If the republicans were to come up with a better replacement for the ACA they might get some support but the bill they are selling makes things worse for a large part of the population.

        As the President said.

‘Nobody knew health care could be so complicated’

“everybody’s got to be covered” and that “the government’s gonna pay for it”

  • Rick D. says:

So, the whiny, wienie, wimpy left is demonstrating against the new health plan, yet they’re OK with paying $3,000 more per year? Where is the logic in that?

    1. Retired says:

Obama and his clan stuck it to the USA along with congress .
