Sen. Elizabeth Warren acknowledged she is “not a person of color” during a commencement speech at a historically black university on Friday.
“As a country, we need to stop pretending that the same doors open for everyone, because they don’t,” the Massachusetts Democrat said at Morgan State University in Baltimore, The Washington Post reported.
“I’m not a person of color,” she said. “And I haven’t lived your life or experienced anything like the subtle prejudice, or more overt harm, that you may have experienced just because of the color of your skin.”
Mrs. Warren decried what she described as systemic racism within the federal government, specifically during the financial crisis of 2008.
